Revolutionary idea! Big problem here in the states too.
All the speeds are in bits, reps will say bytes etc etc.
They are very shady about hardware rentals as well. 150Mb/s modem/router rental goes for $15/month. I nearly got kicked out of the cable provider service center/store when I told other customers there that it was much cheaper to buy your own hardware (and also higher quality).
Luckily my gf and I live in/own a 2 family house and just swap the account between units to keep the introductory pricing haha. Swindle the swindlers.

Really! Why? I've always known when I choose an ISP that the internet package, line rental & call package are priced separately. It's been this way for years why all of a sudden do people not understand it... you get all this information when you shop around and when you sign up to a service.

For the non-tech savvy it really isn't that simple at all.
They try to format the way they show the line rental cost which usually requires asking a representative for clarification.

My in-laws got caught out by sky using the on demand service when the bill got in they got charged for broadband usage, considering they didn't have a computer or even ask for broadband, turns out on demand needs broadband the engineer connected it with out telling them

Quite surprised it even allowed them to access the internet.

As far as I understand it the on demand uses broadband to download what you watch, thus the on demand is free but you pay for it's broadband thus not really free

Yeah, that's right, it uses WiFi though.

Well they didn't want broadband so have no router, so it's plugged in through the phone line, the point being they were never told they would have to pay for free on demand.

Sky have a habit of ripping old people off. Mum got caught out a few years back when she called to have it disconnected. They talked her into a contract that started out very cheap, then went full price after 6 months. Only they talked very quietly when they were explaining the full price part.

Needless to say she now uses Freesat.

Did they contact trading standards? Because if they have proof that they never asked for broadband they could take Sky to court and get their money back plus damages. That being said, Sky will probably say it's part of their Agreement that they signed.

Our local Virgin Media reps are some thieving gits.

My next door neighbour signed up for a 50meg package, Broadband only and when the first bill came she had to pay an additional £50 for installation even though she paid the reps in the shopping centre £50 :(

It'll only get worse if and when BT and Open Reach split expect installation charges to sky rocket and line rentals are always on the up, when I started out in 1996 my line rental was £6.50 a month, it's now £16.99!!! and set to go up again by .50p before the year is out.

Given the state of the UK networking infrastructure and the poor service, just where is the money going and what the hell are we paying for exactly??

My internet has gone up from £24.99p to £34.99p in the last 18 months and when asked they just say "Oh it's operating charges etc...".

The reality of it is the MP's won't do anything about it as VM and companies like them are run by their friends in the "old boy network" and have same school ties.
