Toughts on my (almost) first build

Hi!

I'm building myself a new build. My budget is about 750 euros. Google says that's around £640.

This is what I've come up with so far:

- Mobo: ASUS Sabertooth X58

- CPU: Intel i7-950

- HDD: WD Cavier Green 1TB

- Corsair XMS3 Triple Channel 3x2GB DDR3 DDR-1333 PC3-10666 CL9

- PSU: Advance EA4G-650 650W

- Graphics: SAPPHIRE HD5770 1GB

I'll use this computer as my main everyday machine. I'm not a big gamer but I do play games. Actually I've bought GTA4 and Left 4 Dead 2 on Steam a while a go and still haven't played them because of my current computer.

I'm also a programmer and I usually run 2-3 instances of visual studio on windows 7, itunes and 3 or 4 browsers with about 5 tabs each. I'm a web developer

In my current machine I have 2GB of memory and I'm always using about 90% of it and when I try to switch between windows I often have to wait for the data to be loaded back to RAM again.

Hopefully I would be able to run 1080p HD movies with no problems on this machine and finally get the full potential of my 24" screen.

I plan to put this into my a bit older Antec case.

What to do think about my build. I "designed" it so I can upgrade it a bit in the future (an SSD, more memory, 2nd graphics card). I'm especially curious about your RAM, PSU and graphics opinions. Will PSU provide enough power?

Thanks,

Goran

that setup seems fine

if it was me the only difference would be a WD raptor as OS drive, and then the normal WD as a storage drive, for a bit quicker loading times on things, but otherwise, looks good

Don't waste your money on a craptor they're a complete waste of time and money.

For the same cash you can Raid 0 F3 1tb and they will splat the craptor.

I personally do not know much about the mobo nd i haven't really ever hear of the power supply make, maybe it just my lack of psu knowledge take a look at corsair HX 650, i would definatly Oc your that cpu to get max performace(4Ghz) so id would invest in noctua nh-d14 aswell if it would fit in your case and if you can afford it.

Thanks for your answers guys.

For the hard drive I'll leave it for now. I'll get an SSD in the next 6 months and have that as OS drive.

About the PSU. The brand is pretty new to me to, but I'm a bit limited by the store I'm buying at. I found a Corsair Builder Series CX500 PC Power Supply - 500 W (CMPSU-500CXEU), but would 500W be enough? Or a LC POWER LC6600 GP, 600W?

Noctua NH-D14 is on my upgrade list, along with the mentioned SSD, another 6GB of ram and a 2nd graphics card. But for that I'll need money which I don't have at the moment

Some thought about the PSU please so I can order it in time to get it before new year.

Don't go for WD green, they are terrible slow, Get Blue one.

PSU HX650 if you care about cable managment( as is modular) or CX600W - they are v.good PSUs

psu i would try and get 650w if it was me to be on the safe side and makes room for if you want to xfire/sli

ram if you can get mushkin have a look at them

hdd look at the samsung f3 as alien said

h/s noctua nh-d14 as others have said

everything else is good though i would have a look at the gtx 460s

GTX 460s are a bit expensive here. I'll have to see how much money I'll have left after choosing HDD and PSU.

I'm looking at these Samsung F3s and there seems to be a couple of versions - EcoGreen, SpinPoint and there is also a SpinPoint F3R. Which of these do you suggest?

About the Mushkin memory - I've looked around and there is very little of them here (in Slovenia, where I'm from) or they're very expensive. They were the first manufacturer I looked at as many of motherboard reviews I've read used them.

Also how vital is it to buy memory kits? Because I found these and if I get 3 I actually save about 15 euros which can go towards the GFX and a better PSU.
