If they leave the gameplay mechanics alone and don't try and bolt on all of the rubbish the later titles have we are in for a real treat.
The first one on the N64 was just incredible. It was great on the PSX, but the tearing and jerking graphics gave me a rotten headache after about 8 hours.

I hope so. THPS5's gameplay just felt off compared to previous games.
Full disclosure, I've never played it on the N64. I started with THPS2, 3, and 4 all on PSX. Underground, U2 on PS2, then I kinda lost interest.
Personally, while THPS3 is my favourite entry. I believe Underground's gameplay to be peak for the franchise, even though you don't necessarily need to get off your board in the old THPS games.
The first two were the best. Just like Dave Mirra BMX.
A skateboard or BMX game only needs to be so complicated. After that they started getting desperate, and making them more like GTA games. Which stunk. Don't get me wrong I did have some fun with BMX XXX but the best games were Dave Mirra 1 and 2 (even 2 seemed too big) and Matt Hoffman BMX. The latter basically being a straight clone of THPS1 with BMX in it.
But yeah, I don't want some rank ass quests and stupid people I have to talk to. That was what ruined those games.
That's the N64 version. Yes, it looks like total ass, but at that time it looked so much better than the PS version. In fact, it wasn't just that it had better graphics but it did not have the awful tearing and juddery backgrounds associated with the PS. After a couple of hours gaming on the PS I used to start going boss eyed. And I was only in my early 20s then.
