Ok, so I'm working on a new desk for my office. I wanted something strong, reliable, and large enough to comfortably fit a 3-monitor setup. I also wanted something to keep my cables tidy and concealed from eyesight. I worked up this model in Sketchup to show you guys what I'm planning. So let's take a look...
I didn't want anything flashy or special, just a plain flat-top desk. The desktop will be a 2' x 5' | 3/4" HD Maple Plywood sheet stained Ashwood Grey, with 1/16" black vinyl trim around the edge. Here's an general view of what it will look like:
From the back you can see we have a long, open-faced cable tray for easy access to keep the cables nice and tidy and off the ground. There will be two circular routing holes (1" diameter) on the desktop and two squared cable outlets (3" x 3") on each end of the tray.
I'm planning on using a Nantucket Grey painted reinforced 1.5" x 1.5" steel frame (bolted, not welded) for extra durability. Based on a few quick calculations, I figure it will be able to support up to 575 lbs without stressing the frame. A little overboard on the structure support I'm sure, but nothing wrong with a little extra strength.
I'm going to fabricate the cable tray out of single-fold sheet-metal with rounded edges to prevent any accidents. Originally wanted to go with a wood frame for this, but sheet metal will be easier to work with and more durable after folded, in my opinion.
Finally, here's a look at a 'to scale' three 21' Monitor setup that should give you an idea of the space I'll have.
That's about it for now. I'll start posting pics once I buy the 3/4" plywood and start working on the desktop.
Any tips or ideas you guys might have, feel free to shoot them my way. I'll add more models as I update the design.
