This is going to be my first build!

A weeks time?? god darnit... crap! how can you handle that much excitement? :o
Week is a worst case scenario, takes a time for people to get back into work, so all deliveries are still slow :d Most likely I'll find time to pick them up myself, directly from the store! The benefits of having a winter brake! :)

I was wondering, if budget was no problem what some of you guys would build? I am looking for a project for my son and I. He is an extreme gamer and wants a custom built machine. I want it to be a project we build together. I am not real up to date on all the latest hardware, software and cases(my last actual build was 10 years ago) however I feel confident I can build it, as long as I can get some guidance as far as the hardware.

Well if in that case, I would build something ITX form factor. I have the perfect one for you. It's going to be a challenge, and I am sure you and your son are going to enjoy building this one ( if you choose to ). Posted this one before... I hope it's ok if I do it again.

NIce looking rig. However he is looking for multiple gpu's on a full atx form factor. My appologies I should have mentioned that. If anyone knows how to break this out into a new thread feel free. I don't want to hijack someone elses thread. Also the wife insists that(this is new info) I cannot spend more than $2500 USD on this rig to include case and monitor(s). However I need this machine to be absolutely awesome. Chances are I will never get to do this for him again.

Haha, it's ok to hijack the thread! For multiple monitor setup I personally would look in to a couple of HD 7970's (3gb of Vram for textures and nice bus width, 4gb 670's or 680's in SLI is also an option) on X79 (with a nice 3820 cpu). Just remember not to skimp on a PSU! :) best of luck! I wish I had a dad who could do a build with me :)

I am not really a gamer anymore(played everquest years ago) but he is. So I am going to rely heavily on information I pick up on this forum. It is a suprise for him, so I can't ask him too many questions about what he would like because he is A.) 17 B.) intelectually brilliant according to testing C.)has just found out he has cancer and we don't want him to think its a pity thing. So anyway thanks for the input and I would appreciate more from anyone who would like to give it.

I'm really sorry to hear about your sons condition :( Must be really tough for you all.. You shouldn't be shy, make your own topic and people will help you! I really don't like to give advice, because I haven't built my first comupter yet and I'm afraid to give wrong information. :s I guess I know some things while lurking all the forums and review sites for months now.
Best of luck! :)

Reasoner is right, the psu is more than enough, but if can't do anything about it then :/ too bad... You would have saved some money but you have headroom for further upgrades (future graphic cards or such)

Can you change the fan on a hyper 212 evo?

Open a new thread, I would be very happy to help :)
Does the 2500Usd also include headphones (if needed?)

I am terribly sorry to find out about the condition of your son. I can't even imagine how you feel.
If I were you, I want the best for my son. I'd go with the i7 3770k, the MSI Z77A-G45 Thunderbolt ( most Z77 boards are decent ).. you said your son wants amulti GPU Config... I would suggest getting an AMD Radeon 7990.. ( it's actually 2 7970 into one graphics card and man... it is powerful ) instead of going dual GPU which can sometimes give you only headaches. A NZXT Phantom PHAN-001WT White Steel / Plastic Enthusiast ATX Full Tower Computer Case or a Corsair Special Edition White Graphite Series 600T Steel case, a fully modular CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX850 Power Supply, a H100i CPU cooling kit and a Corsair Neutron Series GTX CSSD-N480GBGTX-BK 2.5" 480GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) and a Western Digital WD Black 1GB, atleast 2x8GB Kingston HyperX Predator of RAM... and he will be very very happy.

2 chips on one card is not good for gaming at all
And for an extreme build i would go with an x79 platfotm

So this is my proposition:

CPU: Intel 3930k (one of the best cpu's ever made)
Motherboard: Asus Rampage IV Extreme (To unleash the 3930k inner beast!)
CPU Cooler: H100i (so it can have the best performance at the best temperatures)
GPU: Two Asus GTX 670's After that the screens cannot actually follow the speed of these gpu's
Power Supply:Corsair AX 760i
SSD: (For the speed of booting + game time loadings are much smaller)
256gb samsung 830 or 840 pro
HDD: Western Digital 1 TB Caviar Black
Case: Corsair 800d (purely magnificent)
Any blu-ray reader will do the job as long it has a sata connection

If your son is a audiophile then consider a sound card :)
And for a screen any IPS or P-IPS panel will have the best colors

Forgat RAM!!!
Corsair dominator Platinum 1600mhz (8 or 16 GB depending on budget :). )

Oh! And it has to be a quadruple channel so 4*2GB or 4*4GB

A 7990 would be absolutely perfect for gaming, plus the 6 GB of VRAM is much needed, as a SLI/Crossfire Config's memory doesn't double when put together.

Most games dont even use more than 1gb, why would you need 6GB?
Even if, the 7990's series was made to exploit high resolution multi monitor and for 3d workings
And in the case of choosing a dual GPU on 1 card situation
I would personnaly have a look at the 690
+ it's a 1000 euros!!! Or usd or gbp!!! (whathever 1000 euros is worth in your currency)

You gave the answer yourself.. multi monitor... don't forget, We're trying to help someone build something for someone dear. Maybe that someone wants to run multi monitor, and if I remember... he did mention that that someone is a hardcore gamer, so I figured that it might provide the best gaming experience if he chooses a multimonitor at very high resolutions. I chose the 7990 because I seen one in action vs the nVidia equivalent and it seemed better to me. Lots of experienced folks that I met had the same thoughts about it, and stated that the AMD solution for multi monitor gaming is a bit more mature. I do respect your choice though. I know for a fact that SLI/Crossfire setups can be tricky sometimes in both cases so can multi GPU cards. For a single GPU Solution I would go for the 7970 or the 670/680, and for a Crossfire/SLI situation I would go for the 7970/670.

Yeah but in that case, he better get 24 inch TN panels because multimonitor setup is soooooooo expensive...

So except for the GPU what do you think of my idea?
