Thermalright HR-03 padding may cause damage!!

The original “white-colored “padding provided by Thermalright was later found to be overly thick and thus preventing a full contact between the heatsink base and the GPU as previously mentioned. In sequence, we strongly urge consumers NOT TO USE THE “WHITE”CUSHION PAD! For those who have already made the purchase for the HR-03 and still feel the need for padding, please contact your authorized Thermalright dealer or directly contact us at support@thermalright.com for a free, improved BLACK-colored cushion padding. Thank you.

I've only just seen this and tekheads did not warn me about the problem. As a result my brand new Graphics Card is now useless!! So I'll have to pay out yet again for another one! Outrageous!

I would change the title to "because I didnt check my work I messed up my video card,"

when you assembled the cooler didnt you check for a proper fit?

I always put a drop of AS-5 than I check for proper contact before final assembly.

Sorry for your trouble though.

Surely to goodness, you would have had the sense to monitor the temperature after installation? I feel for you losing your gfx card, but c'mon. It really is unfair blaming a reseller for something that you should have checked. If anything, perhaps Thermalright should have made the issue clear with an official memo to all resellers. Did you get the 6-pin adaptor for your 7600GT? Even Thermalright remind you here about aftermarket cooling solutions:

Disclaimer:

Thermalright or its owners or partners is not responsible for damage or loss of any kind that may occur as a result of using or misusing this or any product we manufacture. Use common sense and review all product details prior to use.

Try and RMA your card mate.

And thanks for letting us all know of a possible problem.

I couldn't see the surface to surface contact because of the GPU white cushion that the cooler makes contact with all the way around the edge; how can this be checked without x-ray vision?

does the bios have a gpu temperature monitor? I know there is one for the CPU, but where is the GPU monitor please?

It all went 'belly up' rather quickly you see; within 2 minutes of 'power on' it was all over - so to speak - bang!!

You put your thermal paste on, fit the cooler, unfit it, check to see whether the thermal paste has been squished / made contact, then fit it again.

Losing your card sucks :( Try and RMA it, if they claim it is your fault, tell them the fan packed up on the stock cooler

There is a multitude of programs for monitoring GPU temps. Nvidia control panel has its own

...more horror!

Had my system checked out by local shop.

Problems found:

blown capacitor in PSU.

malfunction in GPU. (with thermalright HR-03)

malfunction in Motherboard.

malfunction in CPU.

Whole system is shagged!!

just wish someone had said DO NOT USE WHITE CUSHION/PAD or issued a notice within the package or even sent an urgent email. How am I to know that there is a notice on the website of thermalright. I suspect that most people will use the instructions that came in the box? Like I did! If those instructions have changed since going to print whose responsibility is it to make this known to the buyer?

can I still get the free new black pad instead though? :banghead:

Is that in windows though?

....this 'boot up' was on a brand new clean hard drive with no operating system installed.

I only had the bios monitor to go on at that stage you see?

white cushion?

white compound? or is it a shim of some sort?

I've been looking at reviews but don't see any 'cushion'

In the end, from what I have just read on this thread.

I don't believe the cooler was the porblem... Maybe your PSU just when KA BOom and sent a serge through the system? :(

Unlucky matey.. Its happened to alot of us..

Test the things the shop found yourself, they tend to make things up to get more money out of you.

No there is nothing in windows, that is why you test the contact first and do the screws up nice and tight. What card were you using the HR-03 on?

This reminds me of:

I really think they should make it so only qualified engineers can buy computer components. I'm sure a lot of RMA's are caused by the people installing the components :(.

Agreed! it won't be long before we have colour coded processors, ram and graphics cards that match up with the relevant slots on the motherboard (or are Gigabyte already doing this with their technicoloured mobo's) :P

:p

altho if the mobo and everything is fried maybe it was the PSU

Did they open the PSU up? :) I doubt it as I'm pretty sure it goes against health & safety aswell as voiding the warrenty

me

...this is not the first PC I have built.

I have been building them since 1995 (with 133MHz. CPU!). This is the very first time that anything like this has happened to me. I had a small business selling custom PCs at one stage (1997-2000). Statistically my time was up you might say: "the longer everything goes well - the nearer you are to a fault". I've done well never to have faulty goods or misleading instructions in 12 years but sooner or later it's bound to happen; human error, we are all only 99% - no one is 100% perfect! Maybe I had become self-complacent?

Good Idea! Check what the store said was "Shagged" Becasue they are tring to get as much cash out of use as posable.

This is why I build my own PCs! ;)

I doubt the PSU blew up because of the gfx card.

Also have you checked if the compound makes proper contact yourself?

Seems like they are trying to make money out of you. Also as the PSU blew, just send all the components back under warranty.

Anyone have an image or info on what this cushion thing is? :) sounds dodgy to me
