Thermal Paste beetwen cpu pins

erm...the obvious question is how? The pins are in the socket...and unless your really cack-handed I fail to see how it got on the pins if you put the TIM on while the CPU was out of the board...

yeah mate you should never put it between the pins as this warning courtesy of the AS5 websites shows you:

Caution:

While much safer than silver greases engineered for high electrical conductivity, Arctic Silver thermal compound should be kept away from electrical traces, pins, and leads. The compound is slightly capacitive and could cause problems if it bridged two close-proximity electrical paths.
