The things I have to do to update the firmware of my £200.00 SSD

Hi all,

I will describe what I had to do to update my OCZ vertex 3 here.

It all started with my BSOD problems which were caused by my SSD. It was running firmware version 2.06 at the time.

Firmware version 2.09 fixed these problems so I had to upgrade.

I downloaded the OCZ toolbox to update the firmware. "Updating the firmware from the toolbox is not supported when Windows is running off the drive you are trying to update"

Too bad, so I was off to find another solution.

I learned that the firmware could be updated by using a usb drive with ubuntu installed onto it. I downloaded the ISO provided on the OCZ forums and booted off of the USB drive.

I ran the OCZ toolbox preinstalled on the ISO, "Firmware Update Failed".

At this point I was starting to get a bit frustrated haha, I paid a big amount of money for a product that was not properly tested and updating the product was proving to be quite a hassle !

So I decided to rebuild my old computer, the problem with that was the gfx card had died a few weeks ago so I had to squeeze my GTX 580 Lightning in a case that was way too small haha ! I actually had to stick the card in at an angle because otherwise it wouldn't fit.

Here are some pictures of the build, look at that gfx card dominating the case !

So I hooked the SSD up to the computer and tried updating the firmware again, "Firmware Update Failed".

As a final effort I used the USB drive again this time on my old computer, "Firmware Update Completed Successfully"

This whole ordeal took me about half a day.

It's not really user friendly haha !

Ps: Apologies for the quality of the pictures !
