The Redline @ OC3D milestone thread !

As requested, I got the calculator out.

At the moment I'm getting around 37000 PPD running the V7 Beta.

As mentioned alse where, I have set the bigadv client type but I'm actually getting really small units that take less than an hour to complete.

Thanks.

I'm using the FAH GPU Tracker V2, and for some reason it's not giving me any bigadv units even though I've ticked the option for them. Should I download the V7 Beta and fold both my CPU and GPU on that? Will I get better results?

Sometimes there just are none to give...but I wouldn't worry about it. By Jan 16 you will no longer be able to get bigadv anyway, due to Stanford raising the requirements to receive them (16 threads/cores).

Yep, I heard about that, which is the reason why I didn't start folding with the option checked in the first place. What are you folding with, if you don't mind me asking as you get 400K+ points?

An SR-2 with dual hex Xeons at 3.5ghz. It's folding bigbeta units which take about 2.5 days to complete a single unit but I get 480,000 points for each one. It comes out to about 180k ppd.

Wow, I noticed that you were getting a massive amount every two or 3 days. Are you going to be upgrading to an SR3 later on or sticking with this for folding?

Should I fold with both my GPU and CPU as the CPU PPD goes down to 11 - 13 K sometimes. Is there a way I can prevent this from happening as I'm losing valuable points.

Depending on when the SR3 comes out, I may or may not upgrade right away. This rig is still less than a year old, so I'd like to keep it for a little while. It also depends on how much performance SR3s are giving over my SR2.

I may also end up selling the SR2 at a decent price to a fellow folder to help fund an SR3, but we'll see what happens down the road.

As for your other question, if you're running nvidia + intel then you probably should be running both for maximum ppd. The variance in ppd you see may be due to your general usage of the computer. It shouldn't be from the GPU client as it should only be using 1-2% of a single cpu core.

Oh, OK. I'm just browsing mainly though. Will that affect the PPD by that much? I'm down from 25k PPD to 11 - 13k sometimes. I really need to build a dedicated F@H rig. If you do sell your SR2, how much would it go for? I'm guessing over £2,000.

It will affect it some, not sure if it should be taking it down to 11-13k. Keep an eye on task manager cpu usage and see what f@h is getting. It should be taking up 95-99% of your cpu most of the time.

Not sure how much my SR2 rig is even worth. I'd have to do some research before I could figure out an asking price

I think it might just be something wrong with the GPU Tracker. FAH Client is using 96% of the CPU most of the time. The lowest it's gone to is 84% so far, but it's steady over 90% so that's good.

Thanks again

You could always try the good old console command line client and see if you get any better numbers. Not as pretty but always works well.

I did try that first, but I changed to the GPU Tracker after a few days. I'll try that again to see if it shows any improvement.

My advice, which is what seems to be working well for me.

Use GPU tracker for the GPUs, make sure you select advanced methods for the GPU.

And use V7 Beta for the CPU.

I'm getting good results like that at the moment.

Edit.

GPU Tracker actually uses the console clients. It's just basicly a front end for them.

Thanks. Will try that and see how it works. I didn't have -advmethods checked, so does that mean I lost out on valuable points?

Yeah. -advmethods for the GPU give you a little more PPD than standard. But the biggest advantage I have found (running nVidia) is that the -advmethods for the GPU are much easier on the CPU, so you end up with more PPD on the CPU client than if you are running normal units on the GPU.

I achieved bonus points on GPU tracker V2. If i start using V7, will i still get my bonus points?

The stats are tracked stanford side. No matter what you use to run folding @ home on your computer, you will get the bonus points for SMP.

Thanks, How do i add -advmethods flag to V7? (SMP)

On the main window, top right, select expert from the dropdown.

Then on the top left click on Configure.

Select the Slots tab.

Select the SMP slot and click edit.

At the bottom there is an extra slot options. Click Add.

In the name box enter client-type, then in value enter either advanced or bigadv depending on which you want.

Thanks Pickster, some useful information there

No problem.
