The Quick Fix (itx 4790K build)

So hey there! and Welcome to my Quick Fix build.

So my big "beast" is dead! Black N Blue Typhoon ( http://forum.overclock3d.net/showthread.php?t=69963 )

He got knocked over from his throne and landed on his face ripping the CPU socket holes "out" of the board cause the ShadowRock2 is one heavy block of cooling (cpu cooler cracked the PCB around then CPU socket =/ breaking copperpaths).
My little dog got scared from a "exhaustgasolineblowout" waking my big dog who was sleeping under my desk. He stood up and the desktop bounced-> my screen hit my shelf where my PC lived snapping two bolts and the PC went face first off the shelf missing the desk & the dog, straight into the oakflooring x-/...

Long story short, had to get a new MB & CPU, thought why not do the switch from AMD to Intel now instead of after the christmas holidays. But the local "PC Enthusiast" Shop didn't have any x99 stuff at all (they didn't think someone in this little town (about 50000 ppl) would buy this type and grade off PC hardware) they hadn't even gotten the Skylake stuff sorted or even logged in the system.
But they did have some z97 and DC Stuff. I got a really nice deal on the MB and CPU so actually I'm quite satisfied with this Quick fix =D

I went from a FX8320, ATX Motherboard, 16GB RAM and sli GTX 670s to a i7 4790K, ITX Motherboard, temporary 8GB RAM and just one GTX 670 and there is still a huge difference in the performance and power of this little Beast build.
Still testing this little gem out, might get a new GPU now that I have made the switch.

And here we have some Pic's to make this build a little more fun to read and watch haha,...

First we have the new Parts, a quick test setup and hopefully it boots!

what's in the box?
QuickFixBuild%20(1).jpg

what is it?
QuickFixBuild%20(2).jpg

oooooh!
QuickFixBuild%20(3).jpg

ahhhhh!
QuickFixBuild%20(4).jpg

and we are in!
QuickFixBuild%20(5).jpg

accessories.
QuickFixBuild%20(6).jpg

more packaging.
QuickFixBuild%20(7).jpg

and its out of the box!
QuickFixBuild%20(8).jpg

cosy, really love how Asrock ships their MBs.
QuickFixBuild%20(9).jpg

test RAM, they wont fit with the SR2 =/.
QuickFixBuild%20(10).jpg

The Brain of this little beast, aint she beautiful.
QuickFixBuild%20(11).jpg

Time to buckle up!

stock cooler doing its job, and now it's a nice coffecoaster.

IT BOOTS!!!

So got it up and running, installed it in my Bitfenix Prodigy
(I won it and some accesories a couple of years ago, it was a concept art/theme contest thing on sweclockers.com and I'm hopefully gona try this year to actually get it done cause now i actually got some parts,...)

started with a Cooler Swap to my MB Killer SR2, it's huge!
First I needed something from my stash,...

QuickFixBuild%20(19).jpg

xD
QuickFixBuild%20(20).jpg

Cooler On, the MB looks tiny now. (dont worry about the green fluffy carpet, I'm standing on a ASPWF "AntistaticPortableWorkFloor", made from a piece of mdf and covered in some kitchen tiles)
QuickFixBuild%20(25).jpg

Needed to make 2 cuts in the case cause my old psu is 176mm long without cables attached and the prodigy only has 180mm of space were the PSU would sit, I also flipped the front and made a quick&dirty holder to the fancontroller.
QuickFixBuild%20(21).jpg

Go big or go home.
QuickFixBuild%20(22).jpg

rough.
QuickFixBuild%20(23).jpg

almost straight.
QuickFixBuild%20(24).jpg

And this is how it sits right now, just throw everything in it so that I could start with my work again.

Hopefully You haven't fallen asleep.

The specs. are in the signature.

That's all for now, I'm gona benchmark it tomorrow and ofc post the results here.

(@Wraithguard, I know I'm still using the OCZ PSU, was going to replace it during the fall of this year but short on funds for the quick fix didn't allow for a new psu yet, I'm working on it xD)

And sorry if I'm not the best at writing in english, I'm from Sweden so english ain't my spoken language.

The upcoming plans

Oh right upcoming plans for this little build are:

Air-cooled Version:

  • Window mod
  • Inner panel to hide cables and to make it "pretty" & tidy
  • custom cables (might be extensions, depends on time and money)
  • Lighting
  • A permanent SSD&HDD mount
  • GPU backplate or a new GPU with a backplate xD

Basic Benchmarks

CPU Running @4.4 on all cores, set voltage, it's rough OC. I'm going to fine-tune when there is time for me to play uninteruped.

Room temp about 22°C and the PC is set to silent mode, as this is the daily driver setup.

So some basic benchmarks.

  • CPU-Z
  • Cinebench
  • Valley
  • Atto
  • CDM

  • Temps during these tests
3Dmark results are on the way, hopefully able to do them tonight.

That's why the big Tower CPU coolers scare me - they can damage a lot if mishandled. In this situation however - I'm not sure an AIO cooler would do any better. Glad it missed the dogs! That's a nice little case. Did the AIR540 survive the fall or is this a temporary home?

Hehe the dogs agree!

I think if the old motherboard wouldn't been as old and haggard as it was, it would have survived the straine from the CPUCoolers wight and force. It doesn't have the thickest PCB, if it had a 6layer or thicker PCB it would probably held together.

Well the air540 didn't die a horrible death but its crocked, banged up and the Window got big crackand and scratches. I'm going to give it a try to straighten it out and changing the window when I have the time and money to get a new big build going.

The new little case will continue to be the home of my current setup, at least for time being.

I actually like the small formfactor of the prodigy =D.

Yeah I agree the smaller form factors are the way to go - as long as you can manage the thermal output. My motherboard is ATX so it's a no-go but my next build will probably be mATX or ITX depending on how many GPU's I have to play with. Then again I may try water cooling so I'll stay with a mid tower or maybe a dual chamber box like the AIR series.
