The prices of AMD's RX Vega 64 has increased by almost £100

Update - We have confirmed that this £100 price increase has not been caused by retailers, as they have only been supplied with a limited amount of standalone RX Vega 64 "black" (Reference) products.

It seems that AMD's £449.99 MSRP was only intended to be for standalone GPUs for early adopters, with pricing increasing to £549 thereafter and ship with two free games as part of AMD's "Black Pack". These Games are Prey and Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, which have a combined value of around £59.99.

This means that this "price" increase is not from retailers but was an intentional move from AMD, increasing the price of the RX Vega 64 by over 20%. This price increase is not from retailers or due to supply and demand, retailers were simply provided with a limited number of RX Vega 64 GPUs that could sell at AMD's original MSRP.

AMD's small allotment of RX Vega 64 standalone GPUs sold out within minutes, which means that AMD's RX Vega is unlikely to be seen as AMD's advertised MSRP anytime soon.

We are currently awaiting a response from AMD.

according to gibbo on ocuk this was a move by amd and not by retailers

"Black stand alone card was $499 for a set launch quantity, which is now all sold, as such now all you can buy from OcUK is the bundle packs, Black and Silver which are $599 or the Aqua which is $699. Stand alone is no more, unless AMD say so."

the price hike is for the pack, you wont be able to buy vega from now on without buying a pack....

jesus how many more nails does the vega coffin lid need, i waited for a 290 replacement since the fury flopped and im so glad i switched to nvidia, my only regret was committing to a freesync monitor but hey ho.

Uh... What were you expecting? Coming from the Fury X to Titan XP killer? All at lower power consumption? That's just naive?

Both cards are good. The 56 is fantastic and destroys the 1070 in basically every title. The 64 can compete with the 1080 but it looks like it depends on the game from what I can see.
I don't even see how heat is an argument. It's a reference design?
Power consumption is not as bad as people think. AMD made it worse by saying 1200 watt PSU. You'd be fine with a 650 or 750 depending on what else you have.

This, except the 56 doesn't destroy the 1070. It's just a faster card in a lot of games that will continue to grow. In my opinion, "destroying" a 1070 would be to be faster in every game, cheaper, and more efficient. At the moment it's not cheaper, the 1070 could easily receive a £50 price drop, and the 1070 is significantly more efficient.

That's true but how many people buy GPU's for their computer performance. That's a real question, I honestly don't know. I would think it's a pretty small minority.

I gotta think the vast majority of us are wanting it for its gaming performance tho and in that regard it's a dud. Slower than a 1080 but costing more with more heat and nearly double the power draw. I don't even think the 56 is worth much. It trades wins with the 1070, is about the same price but again that heat and power problem.

Aside from people with Freesync monitors, I really can't think of a reason to buy any Vega card over it's Nvidia counterpart.....and I'm a pretty big AMD fanboy!

It's not slower than a 1080. Show me where it is "slower". More specifically, prove it. But before you do, shall I show you the times the 1080 is slower before or after you show me the times the 1080 is faster? Which would you prefer?

In all seriousness, if AMD thinks they're going to sell me a Vega 64 at £550, all the best to them. In six months time maybe when it's priced back reasonably at £450 (when Volta is but a few months away), but I can't imagine how they're going to squeeze me now. This has really screwed with my Ryzen build. It might need some adjustment.

You aren't Robinson Crusoe there mate. I was specifically holding off on purchasing Ryzen and a Freesync monitor because I couldn't justify the price to performance increase for me over what I already have. So I was hoping that Vega would be awesome so that I could make an all AMD build and have one from each team set up. These results (particularly for the price) are so disappointing, that I have now given that idea away.

Now i'm simply saving up for a Volta card, and waiting to see if another new chipset comes out that overcomes the price/performance of Ryzen for me...

Don't try and convince me to wait for Navi. After this, AMD have burned their bridges for GPU side of things for me. No more waiting for a tech that is "coming soon" only to be delayed again and again, and then disappointment in the price/performance for me.

To be frank, I could have at least ignored much of this pain, IF they priced themselves in a competitive manner. Which they did not. Maybe i'm just jaded now, but I specifically stopped myself from buying a 980ti because "Vega is just around the corner". Ugh.

Yeah, at this stage I wish I'd paid the premium two years ago for a Gsync panel and a 980Ti and then upgraded to Volta 2080. I stand by my thoughts on Pascal being too expensive, but at least they're amazing GPU's. Vega is overpriced and aren't particularly impressive. Vega 56 can at times impress me, but it's too late to be truly impressive. Vega feels like a half-baked gaming GPU and an epic compute GPU. Navi is too far away for me to care about. I can't make my Fury last another 1.5 years so either I need to pay out a huge amount of money for a Gsync/Volta setup next year or give in and buy Vega when the prices drop later this year.

You know what would have happened though, don't you? if you'd have done that Vega would have been awesome :D

Having to choose tech is b****ox IMO. It's like BITD when you had to either pick a Crossfire board or an SLi board. And no matter which one you picked you'd always made the wrong bloody decision. You'd pick SLi and Crossfire would be awesome, you pick Crossfire and SLi would be better. It was only really with the launch of X58 that you didn't have to pick, but even then some boards were Crossfire only to save cash and the boards that did both were bloody expensive !

What monitor do you have? I've been very happy with Adaptive Vsync tbh. Mostly because if you throw enough power at it it hardly ever needs to do anything.

Ahhh I see. It's all AngryGoldfishs' fault. Get him! *shakes pitchfork*

Yep, it's b*****ks, but it is also the way it is. What can we do?

Ha! Sods law.

I have a BenQ XL2730Z. It's still one of the best value Freesync monitors you can buy. Solid TN panel that has very few flaws, 144Hz refresh rate (40-144Hz Freesync range), tasteful and functional stand, 2560x1440p, 1ms response time, £350. The only thing I'd change about it is I wish it was a VA or IPS. I'm starting to wish it had Gsync now, but I think I'm just being dramatic. Vega 64 could see a price drop in the coming months as well as a few driver updates and it might come close to what I originally wanted. We shall see. If it doesn't, I'll wait for Volta and see what the state of affairs are then.

Not to go all dead horse but Gamer's Nexus confirmed with a couple different AIB manufacturers that Gibbo was dead and AMD did offer the rebate to retailers to hit that $450 price point for just a day and prices are going up. So yeah, the story was dead on and Hardware Unboxed can suck it. :D
