I personally don't like this whole exclusivity thing but I still think many developers should do it as long as epic games is this eager to get exclusives.
As I recall they lure them in by guaranteed revenues for their games, meaning if sale targets don't meet the expectation they get the rest from epic games.
This in turn means that by not buying a game from a beloved developer while its exclusive, you support them more because they get their share from epic AND your support through the delayed buy through steam.

To be fair, they are using Epics game engine, it makes sense to use their store to avoid the licensing fees, I doubt they need much more incentive than a 23% increase in revenue per sale, and I doubt there's any underhand tactics needed to go alongside that as a result. They could lose 20% of their sales as a result of this and still come out better for it, but even then they probably won't lose nearly that much.

So greed was the motivating factor behind this choice for Obsidian obviously, yet they are now owned by Microsoft so why even care about engine fees in the first place? This seems like a weird move to me

Microsoft have been doing timed store exclusives in the PC space for years without issue or complaints(Besides those directed at the MS store itself), why would they change that now? profit is always the motivating factor for capitalist companies, it's by definition a profit motivated system.

It's no different from console licensing fees and exclusivity really, we let you use our tech for free if we get your software exclusively, this model been at work for decades. Many PC games over a significant time period have been essentially exclusive to Steam, attempting to unsettle that near monopoly that allows Valve to rinse game developers and leads us to often having price parity with physical console releases at launch on PC is the driving factor for developers adopting alternate stores, near-monopolies are never healthy in capitalist markets, someones going to get rinsed when that happens, Valve has just got away with it by making it the developers. Given the attitude of many PC gamers, at this point they're basically charging companies 30% just to sell their games to PC gamers(Or at least that's how many PC gamers would like it), a supposedly open platform(But not if the gamers can help it it seems), that's absolutely ludicrous.

They may be owned by Microsoft, but Microsoft is not the publisher behind The Outer Worlds.

"not going to steam? not gonna buy it then"... Are think many of you are blinded by how bad steam is now, its practises are disgusting, and it needs competition to prevent further greed.

As Alien says. Are people against it because they have to click another launcher? sheesh... then put the .exe shortcut on your desktop and quit whining.

Any company starting up needs to be aggressive to maintain a foothold. Otherwise it will just fade away before it even began. Especially when Steam has such a monopoly on the market in terms of launchers/libraries

Lets not forget Epic are letting their stores games(Including exclusives) be sold via alternate stores like Humble Store while taking no cut from those sales.

And of course, in Steam you can just click "Add a Non-Steam game to My Library" and boom it's there.

Yep, that just reinforces my confusion of why people are throwing their toys out of their cradle. Honestly, those boycotting epic need to get a grip and grow the f**k up.

I thought the whole witch hunt against Thermaltake was bad. This is on a whole new level of stupidity.

You want a game on PS4, you buy it through their market and paly it on their platform like everyone else. Same with Xbox, PC on the other hand is different.
You can buy your game on steam and play it on their platform, or Origin,Uplay,Epic,GOG, Blizznet (or whatever it is),Social club or Bethesdas whatever its called and guess what, you won't be able to play with your friend who bought it through a different store.
people complain about cross play with consoles, we can't even get all the PC gamers in one place.
If I log into steam, I can't see what my friends on Origin are doing or any other platform but on console I can. Even if I wanted to, ill have to load the client, that needs to update so I have to wait for that, then when im in the game might need and update so i'll have to wait for that. Do this for all your clients and you could be looking at waiting an hour just to gain access to all your games and friends and this is the part that I am against

How is it anti consumer? its the same price it would be on steam, if not cheaper due to the smaller cut from EPIC.

Anti consumer would be like forcing it to a service which you need to subscribe to. I'm pretty sure that once EPIC has their launcher on more and more PCs, along with a vast library that doesnt take a few minutes to get through from start to finish, the aggressiveness will ease and the options will open up once again, across other platforms.

At the moment, for a product that is way behind the curve in terms of features, libraries, and VAS (value added services) the Epic launcher is doing very well. I would say most that come late to the market always struggle, but it appears thats not the case for Epic, who are even able to promote some good titles as freebies every 2 weeks.

Not sure Steam ever did anything like that aside from the free game that popped up once in a blue moon? maybe I am wrong about this. And EPIC arent hindering other sites and services. E.g. as tgrech mentioned, they are sending games on the humble store. Its just Steam they are fighting against in order to show Valve they mean business.

If you don't like open platforms, don't buy into an open platform? That is kinda why consoles are popular.

But if that's your biggest problem, you'll surely like what Epic are doing? Integrating Uplay, MS store and so on features, friends/online lists, sharing the same network infrastructure ect, for any companies that agrees to share it with them. Anything that works on Steam but has seperate networking for other stores is almost certainly because of Steam's multiplayer APIs not being portable or open.
