The Large Hadron Collider generates a petabyte of data every second

generating petabyte of data every second is pretty crazy, Would need some crazy raid/super computers cards even tho they do not store it all only about 25PB of data every year.

Experiments at CERN are generating an entire petabyte of data every second as particles fired around the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at velocities approaching the speed of light are smashed together.

However, Francois Briard, control infrastructure section leader, beam department, explained that CERN doesn’t capture and save all of this data, instead using filters to save only the results of the collisions that are of interest to scientist at the facility.

the LHC has collected some much data already, that it will take the world's fastest computers over 100yrs to analyse it all

Data is sent all over the world for Universities and other research institutes to work on smaller chunks. The layout is actually similar to F@H and other distributed projects.

I attended a workshop at a conference I went to two years ago that detailed how the project worked. The professor giving the lecture also showed his farm for working on the data and he went into detail about the fiber network that's used to get the data around the world.

It was extremely interesting.

.. yet still no higgs boson. Hope they come up with something soon, I wanna be worm hole-ing my way around before fuel prices get out of control
