I'm assuming that comes from the HB SLI bridges, which clearly use both SLI fingers of a card

We did have a quote from an EVGA rep that said this. Which really threw a spanner in the works.

EVGA has since retracted the statement below and has confirmed that old SLI bridge designs will work.

We can confirm that 1080 cards only support up to 2-way SLI and anything above this will not work, no matter the SLI bridge.
Please however keep in mind that if you do use the new SLI bridge along with two 1080 cards, then it gives more performance than 2-way SLI did in the past on previous series.

What if 2 SLI bridges were used between 2 cards simultaneously? It sure looks like the new SLI bridges are actually just two standard SLI bridges in one - one bridge per connector on the card.

Well the 1080s just became a definite replacement again. Was really hoping nVidia would just do away with the bridges.
