Testing a hdd

hi guys :) a mate of mine has given me 2 2tb wd green drives. he knows one is faulty so i put them in my pc, formatted them both, defragged and everything. i then copied a movie onto them both and tried playing it. on one it played perfectly fine, could skip to anywhere in the movie the lot whereas the other one just skipped the movie, lagged, made media player crash etc.

im now using the "ok" one in my pc and im wondering if theres any way i could test this one just to make sure. the only thing going on it is steam so its not a disaster if it dies but i just want to be safe really. any help would be great :d

Im assuming the pre installed program? i tried it and it flashed open a command prompt window then closes before i can see anything

You have to open a cmd window Start -> Type "cmd" -> enter. Then tpye this "chkdsk d: /f" and replace the d: with whatever drive letter your harddrive is. This should work.

Have you heard of Hiren's Boot CD? There are a bunch of awesome tools on there for checking hard-drives. E.g. HD Tune and HD Tune are pretty good.
