System Went Pop

Dicehunter

Resident Newb
So my Crosshair Hero VII board a few minutes ago went pop, 1 of the VRM's around the CPU socket went POOF with magic blue smoke and it took my 3900X with it

Tested my 3900X just to make sure in an X570 board I have, Putting together a build for a friend, And can confirm it's dead, So yeah, Great day........

SO.

I'm weighing up options while I sort out support from Asus considering the board is still within warranty etc... and they'll hopefully help with the CPU considering it was their board that killed it.

Do I stay with AMD or switch over to Intel and get a 9900K ?

Especially considering all I now do on my machine is game and according to all the reviews, Although the 3900X is great, The 9900K is still ahead in gaming especially at my chosen res of 1080P.

I'm no intel fan boy but my second system 8700k runs games great at even 1440p

on a side note was reading your post and my main system had a wobble q code A2 followed by AE so i think you jinxed me too ;)

Sorry to hear this bud, hopefully you can get it sorted quick and painlessly soon.
Onto your question, have you considered the 3700X? As for pure gaming, it's a much better value overall. Since anything over 8 cores is just pointless for gaming. ScienceStudio did a good video on it if you're interested:

I don't know Dicey, do you really want to go back down that rabbit hole again?
Sure the 9900k is faster but it's not that much faster, it's still more expensive, there's no longevity with the socket, it's still vulnerable to all these different attacks so yeah man I wouldn't do it myself, TBH Intel might be worth a look next year when they bring out their new 10nm chips, the mitigation's should be in place, and if they're smart they might extend the life of their sockets to match AMD.

So for the time being I'd just stick with AMD and see what happens next year and then decide.

I'll have to see, A work friend of mines brother built a dual system rig in a Phanteks I think ? Anyway he built a 3900X and 9900K rig, He uses the 3900X for folding and rendering and 9900K for high refresh rate 1080P gaming so I'm going to compare both in real time in the games I play, Whichever does better will be the choice.

I'll probably end up getting Intel/AMD's next CPU this time next year anyway.

Well if that's the case then I guess whichever does what you need it to ATM and TBH I'd say the Intel chip is going to be quicker for you

Sorry to hear that, hope ASUS help you with the cost.

Honestly I don't think there's much between the two choice wise. You'll get, what 5% more FPS on Intel? But a 9900K is actually cheaper than a 3900X at the moment although board costs may even that up. Maybe whatever ASUS offer you will make a difference.

I upgraded to a 9900k in April and haven't got many complaints but if I had upgraded later, I probably would have gone AMD just to support the competition and feature set they've provided.

It could have been a bad CPU. Just because the VRM is burnt doesn't mean it was the board. I'd return both TBH.

If you are going for AMD next year you may as well get AMD now and use the same board next upgrade.

ouch mate, I would think ASUS would replace the board and CPU it is the boards fault re the cpu after all.

I am, Just have to wait for support to get back to me :)

I'll be wanting a new mobo anyway this time next year for better VRM's, Memory support etc... on the next gen stuff so that side of things for me is irrelevant TBH.

I put in a support ticket so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)
