Synology restores 3rd-party HDD support on its 2025 consumer-grade NAS devices, but some restrictions remain.​

Too little too late.

Yeah. The lack of commitment to continuing support for all HDDs is telling. They want to return to this with more "verified" HDD options to attempt to make this look less bad.

Even with this backtrack, there is no reason to trust them anymore. M.2 SSDs also remain locked, so no affordable SSD caching or SSD storage pools.
 
It's cheaper to get a different vendor that supports vastly superior hardware, your own HDDs, and that vendors OS. If you don't like the OS, the other vendors allow any 3rd party OS to be installed. The only reason Synology was the NAS leader was software. Over the past 5 years they've slowed software updates, restricted file type supports, stopped supporting there own software suits, etc.

They can say whatever they like but a half assed commitment to save face is telling as you say. Inspires no reason to think they'll do better.
