G'day seen some wonderful reviews from this site and I would like to request some reviews on surge protection, lets face it we spend alot of money on some really cool rigs but whats the best form of protection for them? It seems to be forgotten in reviews so any ideas would be kindly recieved Cheers.

Thanks for now.

Hmmm - surge protection devices are not really a computer part (or peripheral)

simple surge plugs bought from your local DIY centre are your best bet

obviously price equalling quality

Thanks for the reply dugdiamond, I wasn't sure if there were really good quality surge protectors for the pc market, targeted to pc.

If you really want to protect hardware and even more importantly all that data that has taken you so long to organise, its probably worth looking at a UPS. That way if the power does go then you can shut the system down gracefully.

A lot of it really depends on how good your supply is, and how paranoid you are. I think that with SSD's becoming more prevalent its not as much of an issue as it used to be.

In the old days you used to have to park the heads on your hard disk before you could move the computer, hey you didn't want to loose the data on that precious 20MB drive. Yes MB

IMHO surge protectors are for any electrical device you want to self-insure. your nearest local electrical wholesaler is your best option

saying this, i have seen "kettle" leads with built-in surge protection. but, i think they are a waste of time, cos the lead length is never long enough.

an adapter the goes between the wall socket and the plug is the way to go.

i have one... with a extensionable x6 multi-socket, that all my devices are plugged into.

Thanks sheroo, I had thought about a UPS but dont know much about them and what brands are good to buy and which aren't. And my new rig when I build it will have an ssd. And im thinking Corsair 1200 gold psu.

I have the Corsair 850 Gold and it is a great psu, and so quiet. I picked up a 6 way surge protector at Ikea. If you do look at a UPS in the future, I have one for my home server, APC are a good make.
