I made the jump from XP Pro to Home Premium using the Upgrade and had to spend 2 1/2 hours with MS tech support before I got it to take... but it was worth it! Didn't 'bork' my RAID, all my old programs came through intact (had to reinstall some things, but all the stuff I saved to an external hdd wasn't needed:D ), and Vista recognized a whole lot of stuff right off the bat. For an OS to just come out and be this GOOD is amazing.

Does it have problems? Undoubtedly, and like everyone posted the biggest is having to 'allow' something to run ever time you click on it; and having to run everything as an administrator is an even bigger headache. I can hear people on Teamspeak but can't talk; I have to run as admin to talk while in-game.:mad: I'm confident that with the release of Service Pack 1 a lot of problems will be taken care of, and ease of configuring the OS to ones liking will be much better.

(I was playing Halo last night, and with my 8800GTS and XP Pro I could see actively camouflaged [invis] enemies okay... not anymore!:eek: It was really cool, like the way it should have been from the start, REALLY HARD TO SEE, and even though its not a DX10 game I think I can already see how it will enhance the graphics coming up in new games.:D :cool: :ar: )
 
After a weekend difficultily fixing winsock problems on Win XP x64, and being so despairingly close to rebuilding in XP ordinaire, I ain't going anywhere near anything new/different from M$ until I absolutely have to.

On the +ve side, web pages now load quicker than ever.

I've got a free Vista upgrade for a machine I built end of last year for my gf - I won't be sending off for it.

People were saying the same thing about Xp when that first came out. 98 is soo much faster. You need to understand that a life cycle of an OS is much longer than the life cycle of hardware. So a new OS is bound to be sluggish when it first comes out.

I understand what you are saying.

But there was so much added between XP and 98.. Vista only has MAC looking settings in it.

I am very disappointed in it. :mad:

It is not £300 worth of software.
 
I find that Vista is generally either the same or more responsive than XP, - especially on frequently used programs that it seems to index very very well. But then I have been using it for a few months - long enough to give it a chance.

Yes there are things that don't quite work, but geneally they're to do with drivers or badly written software - not MS fault
 
I am going to give it more time, I guess.

I played with it for 2 days and disliked it. New layouts I wasn't sure about.

Give it a few months.

Hopefully MS will get some back tracking options in the OS for the peeps (like me) who love XP. :p

Pardon me for the correction ;)

It is true tho, by the time of SP1 and above, most of us will be using it - and by the time SP2 comes along ya`ll will question any1 using XP.

It`s pretty much a question of time, my advice to most people with it at-hand is to install it on `something`, just to get used to it if nothing else, coz u will end up having to use it - generally. All u`r fave new games coming out will only work on it and etc, that will be arranged.
 
From what I'm reading it seems to be a lot about how the OS performs rather than how it looks. I've found it to be as responsive as XP Pro; faster on the net, slower at opening a program here or there... but nothing even remotely bad. (Of course its always nice to have ones rig overclocked to help speed things up;) ) A personal dislike I have is that the icons are freakin huge, like grandma has 'em so she can see whats on the screen... I like mine a bit smaller. And Freecell has been gayed... not cool. But chess has been added, so thats a plus. :rolleyes: :D

You keep mentioning you paid 300 pounds, Tox... wth. I don't know any reason to buy retail versions that are two to three times the price of an OEM. I paid $175 (thats with tax) for my Home Premium Upgrade at Wally-World (WalMart), and for a new OS that ain't bad.

What it really boils down to, though, is do you have a reason for upgrading to Vista from XP... I'm ready for Halo2 and DX10 games to come out, so that's my motivation. If you don't have any reason to upgrade, wait until you do, and let MS work out the bugs and lower the price a little.

Aye exactly - that's the point - if you dont have to or want to upgrade from XP then just dont. Personally I'm glad I did - just wish creative didn't suck at making drivers

I bought retail so I can re-install when I want to/need to but I'm hardly your average user.
 
Thought of something else while I was working... if you build a new system, I would go with Vista over XP, just take a look at which version you need and then choose. Matter of fact, unless this pc is for Granny I wouldn't go for less than Home Premium, and wouldn't go for Ultimate unless you needed it for specific reasons... I mean, what the heck do I need BitLocker for?:eh:
