but he wants his rig to last 4yrs - i suggest a mild overclock to about 4GHz.

the H100 will not fill up the rig as much as the monster D14, and also not limit him to ram choices

Any particular reason not to go for the Seagate? They are significantly cheaper at that capacity (maybe this is indicative of their quality?)

I will be over clocking, but as suggested not very far. I went for the D14 as my case of choice is primarily an air cooling case. I do not expect it to be running at much more than idle a large amount of the time. But I would prefer that (and the low volume associated with that) to a louder smaller capacity cooler.

I was planning to upgrade to the 750W version of the PSU that is currently on the list.

Currently bidding on a FX 4800 for £120 ($190) with 5 hours to go!

Apparently 'purchased in September. I hardly used it can say 3 to 4 times as the purpose was finished. I was using on a Dell server.'

Above is what I am bidding on. Can someone confirm that later versions of the Widows FX 4800 had vents on both PCI slots as the Mac one did. The seller claims to have been using it in a Dell server so I am assuming that this is a Windows one but can't find any pictures of others to back that up.


If that fails there is one on for £285 BIN ($450)...
 
the mac and win versions are totally different. but i do not know

but, with that said - that is a oooooooooge bargain
 
eBay I salute you! A FX 4800 for £205 ($320). It arrives on Friday. Here's to hoping it is the windows version...

I will order the remainder of the parts later tonight. Any last minute ideas?

I may well do. The majority of my 3D work so far has been Architecture bassed, but it would be interesting to branch out...

Some of my latest work is on my Flickr. Would be interesting to hear the opinion of someone who was not actually an Architect.
 
After a little more research I am getting tempted to go with a Xeon E3-1230 V2 instead of the i7 3770k. The Xeon is ~6.5% slower than the i7 in benchmarks, but this swap would give me a saving of £75 (~$110), enough to get a full 32GB RAM set (G.Skill 32GB DDR3 1600MHz RipjawsZ). I think the advantages of the extra RAM would out way the ~6.5% performance loss. The Xeon is also marketed as a more reliable CPU with more efficient multithread processing (as opposed to i7), both of these would also be an advantage to me. Any overclocking I would have done with the i7 would have been minimal in favor of stability, so I do not see this as a great loss.

Does this sound a sensible idea?

If I were to go with the Xeon, I don't see the ND14 as necessary anymore. What cooler would you suggest? (Silence is a priority over price). And would the decreased power draw of the Xeon mean I could get a smaller PSU? (A 650w instead of a 750w say).
