Strange USB sound behaviour

Hey guys,

So I've noticed an odd thing with my PC and haven't been able to figure it out, so thought maybe you experts could help me out?...

So the thing that happens is that I hear the same sound as when unplug a USB stick from your PC. That exact sound I hear occasionally, from time to time. But only that sound, I don't hear the Windows "plug" sound after it, just the windows "unplug" sound effect.

And when this happens, I hear all my fans in my system ramp up for a few seconds, to later spin back down.

And this phenomen happens at times, not sure why though. It happened when I was on Windows 10 and thought it maybe was 10 that caused it. Since my entire sound broke, so had to reinstall Windows again (after some short counceling with Feronix).

So I then installed Windows 8.1 instead, as got quite upset with 10 at the time and it was quite late, if I recall correctly. And now it has started on 8.1 again (non activated Windows though).

Specs are:

i7 5820K
ASUS X99-M WS
16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 3000MHz
EVGA 980Ti "Black Edition"
Samsung 950 Pro M.2 SSD 512GB
Corsair HX750i
BitFenix Pandora Window

Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks guys,
Chrazey

Have you actually looked at your CPU usage when it happens? What do you already have plugged into your usb ports? Do you happen to have a fanhub/fan software controlled by the motherboard (like Corsair Link)?

CPU usage I haven't really, as to be honest, I wouldn't know what to look for? Other than seeing if it spikes or not, I assume?... (Sorry feel a bit dumb now)

Keyboard, mouse and my headset are all usb connected and only the ones connected, that are USB.

Umm not that I know of and that I have manually installed, since it's pretty much a barebone Windows. Except for Chrome and Spotify. I did have Link intalled, but haven't installed it yet since the rebuild.

Once I have called Microsoft and activated my Windows, I'll install Windows 10 again. But in case it happens again, I'd like to try and get to the bottom of it.

Thanks barnsley.

Yeah just see if there is any weird cpu usage when you unplug something. Its not a particularly likely cause but its a start.

My old damaged mother board makes the same sound due to broken lane with the onboard audio. basically if I have the audio jack in, it consistently recognises new audio input and spams the sound windows makes when inserting a usb device.

Well I haven't really looked deeply onto it barnsley, but I heard the sound and quickly opened task manager... Did see a small CPU spike, not sure if it was caused by that or by me opening task manager.

And warchild, if that is the cause on my brand new X99 board... Then I'll be utterly sad :(

I get that from time to time. A usb cable connecting an external is a bit dodgy so it will drop out. My monitor did that as well as the cable was bent too tightly however that would disconnect and reconnect later on.

I'd remove any USB devices and se whether the issue continues. It may be something going to sleep or do you have anything on internal usb headers? Xbox controller or something?

I do have my Corsair Commander Mini connected to the internal usb header on the motherboard. Which also the fans are connected to, the ones that I mentioned spins up.
Now that I come to think of it...
