Stopping A Gfx card using 256Mb Of RAM?

Hey, Just a quick question really. I'm not 100% sure if I'm correct here but if a Gfx card is rated as 256MB (Supporting 512) it means that it can use 256 of your system memory? I think thats right anyway.

So, my question is, where abouts can I specify weather or not it uses the extra 256?

Sorry if this doesn't make much sense. Please ask questions if needed :)

Hey, No this is not onboard Gfx. I've had a look in the BIOS and can't seem to find it anywhere. However, I will have another look. Do you have any ideas where abouts in the BIOS it may be?

Update: I have jsut had another quick look in the bios and cannot find anything that it could be. It is possible that my card is 256Mb only, I'm confused thought because I've have a huge Gfx and CPU upgrade and gained minimal speed. I currently only have 512 Mb installed and I've got a feeling 256 of it is being used by the card. Is there anyway I can check?

If the card isn't onboard then it won't take any ram up.. (someone correct me if im wrong)

Maybe there is someting else wrong.. virus?

Yes thats what I think. Is there any way I can check to see if it is using the extra or not?

Also it's definately not a virus/spyware problem.

Edit: The card is a NVidia 7300GT PCI-E Golden Sample Edition. It seems to be a pretty rare card, it looks just like a lot of the 7600 series. The mobo is a pretty cheap Abit NF-95 due to my ASUS A8N arriving faulty.

Whats the graphics card? A link to the exact one prefrably?

I would expect anything that says that in the spec to be a turbo cashe card.

Hmm, Its a Gainward GS card, so i would have thought the ram was onboard.

Check in Right click on My Computer-> Properties too see how much ram windows thinks you have and report back.

It's a GT card according to all the manuals, boxes drivers. It even displays as a 7300GT in windows display properties etc. It just looks identical to a GS and it's clock speed are higher.

Windows also still thinks I have 512 (Which is correct)

I think it could be I need to defrag as I had a reformat recently and didn't re-install my steam games.

Theres the problem then!

Uninstall/delete all old games, do a registry clean and then reinstall them! :)

You must of been confuzzeling windows! :)

GS = Golden Sample in this context mate. They are usualy very good. This would suggest to me that its got 256mb on the card. Wich is plenty for that gpu. I dout you can allocate system memory. Thats what the (terrible) turbo cashe version of that card does.

As for the loading times, id get at least another 512 stick of ram.

Yeh I'm working on getting anoher 512. What still confuses me though is that things loaded quicker with that same RAM and a slower CPU + Gfx card

Edit: Drivers all installed fine, haven't acctualy updated them to the lastest yet. Power should be fine. I'm running a 400w PSU and the manual says a 350w with my setup would still be ample

Also if youve upgraded your graphics card im assuming that you've uped the graphical settings? That would cause longer load times too.
