Still having issues (GTX580)

Hey Guys

A few months ago I replaced my GTX480's with GTX580's running SLI.

I had NO problems at all with the GTX480's my PC used to run 24/7 without any issue.

Now I have the GTX580's I have been having a few driver issues, I have installed the latest drivers, the problem is, if I leave my PC on for a couple of days, (Like yesterday I was at work, so PC was idle all day) when I got home and tried to do something the drivers crashed, screen went black, then came back on, but anything I tried to play after that was pixalated.

I checked the temps of the cards before the drivers crashed last night, and they were (Top card 50 degrees - Bottom card 48 degrees)

BUT if I turn my PC off everyday, I don't get an issue. (Or haven't so far)

Sleep mode etc is disabled, If I leave the PC for any length of time I turn monitor off.

Thanks Hay

You should try just taking one card out and leaving the other one in and see if the same occurs. After that you could switch them around to see if there's a problem with an individual card.

Or you could stress test each card individually to see if any errors occur

I ran the Heaven Benchmark a few times last night, all solid.

Results:-

FPS 82.0

Scores - 2065

Min FPS 27.1

Max FPS 170.2

The individual cards are fine, One went off to scan as I thought there was a fault, came back no fault found, and while that card was away I was using the other card with no issues.

I only get the issue if I leave my PC on for a couple of days.

Maybe it's a driver problem, try installing a older driver if there is one I have a AMD card myself and I don't know anything about Nvidia cards.

hmm.

This really is a strange one. One I'd really like to have hands-on of the system to sort it out.

I'm imagining Windows 7 x64 - go into the ControlPanel->Power Options and make sure you're on High Performance. As standard Windows will set the install as "Balanced" (as all reviewers should know)

Secondly, kill the hibernation, something you can do in all versions of Windows, by opening a CMD (Run As Admin), and use the command "powercfg.exe -h off". (this also frees up up to 3g on the c: drive for anyone interested)

Thirdly, go into the nVidia control panel and have a look at the settings in the first batch at the top left. The first will have the usual vague 3d settings "Adjust Image Settings With Preview", stick them on best performance. Then look at the 2nd option in the top left of the window which allows you to set settings for different programs (or all of them)"Manage 3D Settings". Make sure you're on "Single display" if you use 1 monitor in "Multi-display/Mixed-GPU Acceleration", but also look at where it says something like "Power Management Mode" and set it to "Prefer Maximum Performance". (reviewers/benchers should know these steps too)

(the basic Windows sleeping/screensaving options won't/shouldn't be effected if untouched)

Technically, the above should work without you making any changes to them, in an ideal world. But if you make the changes and the pc as a whole starts behaving itself, then you'll know it's how Windows->Drivers are handling the moments of low use. From that point you can investigate further if you care to.

Thanks will try that when I get home from work.

Strange that I had no probs with the GTX 480. But will try what you said and report back

Hi,

With 2 480's since installing latest driver opening FRAPS and other programmes has made the screen black quickly, randomly. Didn't happen before the new driver

Thanks m8, just for the record I am neither a reviewer or benchmarker, was using Heaven to test the stability.

I have made the changes you have suggested, will leave PC on, and see what happens, will report back with result

I see there's 4 drivers available. 3WHQL and 1 BETA. Tried them? Could be months for a new driver

my experience think it's a hardware problem as your rig is idle, not sure ofc

Do you update drivers from NVIDIA's website or Windows update, device manager

A 9800GT malfunction'd since I used device manager updater for todays latest driver

Scan have tested the cards and found no faults.

I use Nvidia website, I have the latest drivers installed (266.58)

That's the driver I'm usin that makes the screen go black fo about a split seconds or more when I open programmes like FRAPS often and MEDIA PLAYER it happened once

If the system is overclocked you could use Turbo V to set the ferquencys etc to default values for when the system idles for a long time

In addition to the testing above, considering drivers, I'd normally advocate selecting a driver for the card people use as: the xxx.5+ number.

The xxx being the whole number of the driver around the time of the card's release. .0 to .49 being "experimental" drivers and those over .50 being solid. If you step over the whole number value, for example 265 to 266, nVidia are working more on the card that's "to come" rather than yours.

Seems odd that 266.58 may not be behaving itself, but that could be cos they're thinking "595" card predominantly. In addition, they start sticking in fixes and patches that help the newest cards, things microsoft are coming out with and so on.

So, apart from the above tests, try driverset 265.5x (or anything above 265.49, that's still less than 266.50).

All else fails, try those drivers you used on the 480s.

That ducking in and out of black screens is happening to a load of people. I don't know if the drivers mess with the monitor at all, but since trying some newer nvidia drivers, the same monitor that has a Mac plugged in the hdmi does the same thing.

Cheers guys will try that if all else fails, since changing the power options to performance it's been ok for 27+ hours, so will see how it goes

Update::

Since I have set the power option to Best Proformance, I haven't had the issue (Touch wood) its been running 24/7 since that time, so hopefully a fix.

So am guessing its a windows issue rather than a hardware issue. Well so far so good, since the changes

I will update if the problem returns, but at the mo THANKS GUYS

Ok so got up this morning to a black screen, when I restarted pc the drivers had crashed, it has been left on 24/7 since I changed the setting to performance.

So I have now turned it off for couple of hours, should be ok after that again, so is it bad drivers causing this???

Also my CPU was folding when it happened guessing in the middle of the night, as was ok when I left it at about 12am
