So a few weeks ago I bought the SteelSeries Siberia V2 Blue Edition headset.
Having used it for quite a while now, I believe I have enough time with them to write a good review.
So let's start off with a picture. This is what the blue Siberia V2 looks like. Ignore my fancy keycaps please
So let's start off with the obvious: sound.
First the headphone sound. The sound from the earpieces is clear and not muddled. The volume can go up quite high, especially with an amp (FiiO E6, Xonar DG, etc) Bass is quite heavy however it's not just layered on top of everything unlike products like Beats. It comes in when it's needed. Also, it's very punchy. Highs are not very clear, for example in trills it's harder to hear different pitches as opposed to professional-level speakers or headphones. Still decent for the money though.
This headset is also advertised as a surround sound headset, which it does not deliver much of, even with a 5.1 sound card. I get better results with AudioTechnica M50s.
Now mic quality.
Mic quality is decent, however it does not compare at all to the LifeChat LX-3000, one of the best if not the best headset mic out there.
Volume is quite low, I have to boost it all the way in the sound settings and also keep it close to my mouth in order to be heard well.
Also, you don't want to mumble with this mic. While you're mumbling it's pretty much impossible to hear what you're saying.
Next obvious point would be build quality and design.
I really like the support system, it's not a constant band across your head, instead it's a spring-loaded system. Very comfortable, made even better by the fact that it's so light.
In terms of sound isolation, it blocks out a fair bit of noise but is not at the top. From outside, you usually cannot hear what people are listening to while wearing it unless the volume is cranked up. Quick note: in pictures the headset may look to be an open design, but it's really not.
Overall sturdyness and put-togetherness is decent but could be greatly improved. The point where the support bars over your head meet the earpiece is quite flimsy. Also the pull-out mic is very flimsy, I recommend either leaving it out or in. Not constantly pulling it in and out. Soon won't be an issue as I have a Blue Yeti on the way.
The cord is well made, but a braided cable would've been even better. The cord is composed of 2 pieces, a shorter one and a longer extension which can be detached if the extra length is not needed. Very nice touch.
The inline controls are obviously functional. The volume wheel is very small however and I rarely find myself using it. The mic switch is flimsy, and it's hard to tell if it's muted or not. It doesn't have an LED, instead just a painted surface that appears when you slide the switch. I recommend assigning a mute hotkey if you are using Teamspeak or Ventrilo.
Overall, at the regular retail price of $90 here in Canada, I wouldn't recommend it. At that price I'd go with a ModMic and a decent pair of headphones. However I got mines on sale for $60, which is a really good deal for this headset.
Thanks for reading my review. This is my first review so don't hesitate to leave suggestions as to how I can improve my reviews
Have a great day
