Steam/Xbox/PS controllers

Hey there guys. First off, sorry if this isn't the right section for this, tbh I couldn't find a good place for it.

Ok so I am finding myself wanting a PC controller. I know the Xbox one is kind of ubiquitous and most people use it, however I am still left wondering if the other 2 are better options? I as understand it, Steams works with any game? I don't know if that's true but that is the impression I get. PS's controller is easily the worst one, but seeing as Valve is getting that on par with there own through there own API, is it worth investing into that? I already own a PS4. I could buy the USB adapter if that works, many amazon reviews say otherwise however..

Really I just want the best one. All are roughly equal in price, but what matters to me is compatibility with games, like racing(not into wheels, not worth the expense for me) or console ports that support controllers. I am comfortable already with the console controllers, but I can easily figure out the Steams layout. Any help is appreciated:)

I've tried all 3 and IMO the Steam 1 after you get use to it is very fun to use.

For ease of use the XB1 wins hands down as it seems every game comes with XB1 buttons already mapped out.

The PS controller while it is very comfortable is a little pain in the rear due to most of the time needing an external program to map the buttons to said game.

For overall fun to use I'd go with this order -

1. Steam controller
2. XB1 controller
3. PS4 controller

Thanks for the input man! Good to hear your opinion on using at least the two most popular ones.
Is the steam controller not already mapped out like the XB1 or not supported as often? If it's a case if mapping. I could easily do that.
But would you consider this for usability out of the box?
1. Xb1 Controller
2. Steam Controller
3. Ps4 controller

Thanks for the input bud

You're welcome :)

I'd say your list for ease of use/usability is quite accurate, The XB1 controller really does win hands down when it comes to plug'n'play, I found in the short amount of time that I borrowed a Steam controller that a few games did have to be remapped whereas the XB1 controller with the majority of titles was just plug'n'play which was quite handy.

IMO it's about what you find comfortable.

XB1 being probably my favourite in that regard.

Steam controller has LOTS more features and is way easier to use with steam games + has desktop use. However it 100% WILL take hand retraining if you're used to xbox, or maybe even ps4, because the stick and buttons are in opposite places for the right hand side.

Some are fine with that, I was less so :( found it difficult.

It's constantly getting better, Steam are always updating their drivers/bindings/possibilities and stuff and you're no where near as locked into the hardware factor that you are with the other two.

The feedback buzz stuff is fully customisable and is really cool, but there's nothing quite the same as an actual, physical, moving stick..

Personally, I'd say try it, they're not that expensive and are still cheaper than trying to wirelessly attach an xb1/360 pad to a PC.

I think the 'version 2' will probably be the 'one' but I'm glad I've tried the first iteration, it's handy for doing things like Rocksmith in the living room on PC.

It can only really get better for the Steam one, but it's all about if you find it comfortable because it *is* a bit strange.

For racing, the xb1/360 pads are best. You don't get the FFB from the small motors in the XB1 pad (unless I missed something) but the trigger throw is *far* better than the steam one, you can be far more accurate in throttle/braking control.

But again, the trigger on the steam one has an end-of-throw detent 'click' you can utilise for all sorts, (imagine using it for shift-up in a racing game, so instead of tapping A/B/X/Y or a shoulder button, you just pull the trigger fully to shift-up) and the back triggers are also cool and can be handy, though to click them you often click the touchpads as well.

Does version 2 of the Steam controller have a release date ?

I was going to get 1 last week but read Steam are coming out with V2 so held off on my purchase.

I use an xbox360 controller. PS controllers are a pain to get to work, the steam controller is a bit expensive and i am no friend of touch controls. Really for anything but fighting games the 360 controller is probably your best choice. Does the xbone controller do anything the 360 controller can't do? It's twice the price.

Always gone with the Xbox controllers in all honesty, had multiple 360 controllers over the years, still have a couple as reserves should I need one but I have the XBone controller now and it is a delight feels a lot more comfortable for long gaming periods and the new trigger vibrations are a bit special (Forza Apex).

HM so far the XB1 controller seems to be winning for me in regards to just plugnplay.

However I for some reason really want a steam controller. But before i get that, what are the downsides to it from a software standpoint? I know the hardware is fine, and I love the paddles underneath, but if there's anything off with software like glitches or have to wait for a steam controller update to get mapping for a game, I'd rather opt for the XB1

Also thanks for the help guys:)

I can't really comment too much on the Steam controller as I only had it for a few days and didn't really delve too much into it but if you are wanting to get 1 I'd wait as from the various bits of info I've read around the place, Valve are coming out with a new version.

I heard that too, but seems more like an ergonomic and button(s) upgrades than anything? Just hope they keep it the same price. Otherwise XB1 is definitely the one I would end up getting.
