Steam Cancellations will be "up to developers and publishers" says Epic Games Head

Some people still seem convinced a game selling on Epic store has notably harmed sales vs Steam and there must be cash sums to back up these deals. But many of these same people say they are committing to buying the games on Steam still (As there's only timed exclusivity). So surely they must realise if the community is openly stating a late launch won't dissuade them from buying them game anyway, then the company isn't taking risks and don't need "bribes" to go for these deals that give them the chance of a higher cut during the highest sales period. Not that Epic exclusivity has seemed to harm games much from what we know so far, chances are most timed exclusive games will still sell better on Epic than Steam because most of the sales for a big game are usually within a month of launch regardless of what launcher or platform.

While the Epic Games Store is behind Steam when it comes to features, it is hard to argue that Epic's favourable revenue splits doesn't represent a positive change for the PC gaming platform.

Depends how you look at it. I remember several conversations on here about how devs are not putting as much effort into PC games and are not as inclined to port to PC because of the additional work involved. This extra revenue is a good way to tempt them into the market.

I am still on the side of there being to many different launchers/platforms/stores on PC, I would rather not have to launch 10 different programs to get to all of my games libraries but this is the way PC gaming is going now.
This and Micro-transactions :(

If Valve want to stop this they need to either start making games again and not just sitting on their hands, Or adjust their revenue split.

And that I think is the main problem. They have lost touch with what made them so great. Making games like Half Life. Now they just sit back and reap the profits of other peoples hard work. I have read three articles now and all three said exactly what you stated.

Don't like - Epic starts at boot. I really must stop it doing that.
Do like - free games pop up haha. So I just got another one free. "The Witness" or something. I'll take free :D

I turned off EPIC starting on boot. I like the free games so far. Subnautica is just amazing. I wish the VR menu would be fixed though. Cant see the guides as its offscreen. also, tried the witness. Its quite fun :D

^This. It surely can't be THAT hard and THAT terrible for them to give devs a little more dosh...

On the other hand, Epic's free games have, so far, been all pretty new and very nice from what I've heard. The Witness also is not that old yet, right? Definitely better than EA's "Games on the house" back then. Besides Dead Space 1, EA didn't put up anything that's noteworthy to me.

^This^ While I do appreciate Valve's push with VR and Linux gaming, they need to make GAMES to remain a big player in the GAMING market. Artifact isn't going to cut it.

It is clear that publishers are liking what Epic Games is doing on PC, as otherwise, they wouldn't secure any exclusives. Beyond that, Epic Games are being a lot more transparent about their service and their development plans than Valve are.

While I can understand the hate of the Epic Games Store, the PC gaming industry needed a shakeup.

I'd be curious to know how much Epic Games' influence helped Quantic Dream decide to release their former PlayStation exclusives on PC.

Well its a port to pc, and a fraction of a cut than Steam. Provided its more polished than the Batman AK port they have already done alot of the hard work. So its potentially "easy money" for something many in the PC community have been begging for.

How many PS exclusive titles have we wanted to see? Imagine if Last of Us had been remastered and ported. I would be all over it. Or the entire Uncharted franchise. If Epic can entice developers to do the same, im in full support.

The shame is that Naughty Dog is a first party Sony Studio, so Sony will prevent Last of Us and Uncharted from reaching other platforms.

What we may get is some more 3rd party exclusives come to PC, as we have seen with other former PlayStation exclusives recently like Flower, Journey, Yakuza and now the recent Quantic Dream titles.

The strange thing with the Quantic Dream games is that they were Sony published, IIRC.

Did not know that. You sir crushed my dreams :(

"sign funding/exclusivity deals" - this is about forcing people onto Epic and bribing publishers, not about giving a greater percentage of hard earned back to developers. A new platform would be expected to undercut the main stream (cough steam) competitor so that is to be expected. Providing "funding" for exclusivity - not exactly a fair, open market solution. At what point is bribery ok?

Is there any evidence, discussion, or even hint, in any form, of any bribery at all? Is it not just another gamer conspiracy from the rumor mill?

With Quantum Dream the studio has basically gone indie and Epic are sort of their defacto PC publisher so honestly I'd fully expect some funding to take place but there's nothing actually suggesting that's happening or has happened anywhere from what I can see.

If any cash was exchanged for these exclusives there's no way we wouldn't know about it in this generation of leaking, and yet there's not even a tiny hint of it from any of the games, publishers, developers ect that have arranged exclusivity so far. Remembering some of these companies are public and so would legally have to state it was happening.

I'm sure if the price on Steam was 40% more than it is on epic to counter the higher cut steam take, the same people moaning about exclusives would start moaning about the higher price on steam and how they are punished for wanting to use steam

Lol... let the conspiracies begin. Give me proof and then I will consider your words.

Epic released information that they don't force any publisher. Its on the developer publish to choose where they go. Epic just welcome with open arms while applying a gentle snigger towards the popular platforms.

Actually I don't think they would. People are so dead set in their ways, they will pay the extra just to prevent a few extra clicks or extra storage space from another launcher. Some really want their library in one place and will not budge on that.

I would rather sell my pc and game on my console than have this crap installed on my pc.
The pc games that go on this store i will just buy on console like i did with metro exodus OR i will just wait for them to go on steam.

LOL

And here is the perfect example I refer to.

Its like the Nvidia fan who will pay twice the price of a gPU just because he dislikes AMD allowing Nvidia to continue their shocking practise.

Steam will never improve their practises as long as the drones continue to wander at their feet.

Yep point made with no effort needed

The "people" I was referring to are the customers. Steam is probably the most recognised digital games store on the PC at the moment hence "incentives" are being offered above the bigger % sales kept by publishers/developers to use Epic instead. The quotes from Epic seem to imply funding is available for these "exclusives" - forcing customers to pay for that in the end (the customer always pays). There is little in law to distinguish incentive from bribes (bribes do not have to be cash) and in the EU a least this may come under the anti-competition legislation.
