SSD?

Right. Here goes...

I know I've already got my parts ready for my build, but I've been seeing more and more of SSDs.

I know there's the speed advantage and it's silent, but I want some opinions...

I'm considering having 2x 750GB hard drives in RAID (probably RAID0). Would it be worth getting an SSD to put the OS on?

They're pricey and - in terms of storage available - small.

What do people generally use them for?

Thanks

TC

Well, for starters, people usually use them for an OS boot. When you say that they are pricey, they are still coming down a bit. I bought a 120GB SSD which has my OS on it and it works beautifully, for just $130. A 120GB will hold the OS and a few applications that you heavily.. In my case the most current games I play.

I'd recommend one. I feel a great performance output from them, even doing trivial matters.

one ssd will blow away your raided 750's easily. I run 2 ssd's in raid 0 and love it both 64GB C300's the slowest of the sata 6gb/sec ssd's and there stonking fast. I dont find myself using my hdd much at all these days as my ssd's even at only 119Gb formatted hold all I need. If I was you I'd get a 64-128GB ssd and use the raided 750's as storage.

After a bit of thought, that's the idea that's been brewing.

I think I'll put my OS on an SSD, and use the RAID array for storage.

Are there some things that might benefit from being on an SSD rather than an HDD?

why would you not want it to be doing a lot of writing to the drive? I just ordered a corsair force GT 120GB.

I was thinking of putting my web browser, office suite, OS, photoshop, 3dsMax & whatever game I am currently playing on there.

Is that unwise?

From what I've seen, each chip(?) in an SSD only has a limited number of Read/Write cycles. The controller makes sure each chip gets used evenly. If you're going to have a program that reads/writes a lot, then it's best to have it on a mechanical HDD.

(Although don't quote me)
