Binning and refinement. It's pretty clear now that Ryzen was designed to run far slower than AMD have had to release it at. Same sort of story as Fury X really. "Let's design a new product, but release it in ages when everything else has gotten faster. Oh fudge, gotta clock the crap out of it to make it competitive".

See the RX 580? I would bet my hat that the same sort of thing will happen with Ryzen. IE - as AMD get better at it they will release revised CPUs that are faster. That, or like the 5820k later samples will be much better.

At launch the 5820k could only manage an average of around 4ghz OC before it just got ridiculous with volts+temps. A year later Intel were knocking out chips that did 4.4 easily, and up to 4.7.

These lower end cheap CPUs are going to be rather rubbish tbh. I mean they literally are rubbish. Not rubbish as in crap CPUs, but rubbish that would have gone in the bin if we no longer used quad core CPUs.
