Spac attack - Vista 64bit and Raid0

OK, so I d/l the 64bit drivers from asus and whack them on a usb.

I have 2 hdd I want to raid0 but one is partitioned.

I get to install, select drivers only to be told there aren't any compatible... Unticking the 'exclude incompatible drivers' I see the ich9r raid driver and select it.

Loads.

Pick a drive you want to install vista on... Errr, well i want to select 2 drives only because of the partition it looks like 3, that aside i can only select 1 hdd...

I don't know what I'm doing. Help.

Edit: Right, I merged the partitions so now we have 2 identical drives...

Not I mate.. I've got plenty of Raid questions myself but before I even think about it I've got other bits I wanna sort out.

Sorry :(

Sure someone else must be able to though? Lend the man a hand!!

Tbh m8, I`ve not done this b4, but I have no doubt I could fumble my way through it.

In which case I`d rather some1 who`s done it b4 to tell u all about it.

I guessing the 2 drives u have u don`t have anything on them that u want (little confused here cos u said u had a partition going on).

In the sense that u have 2 harddrives in raid0 (setup via the hardware at boot ?) - then I`m thinking the OS should see them as 1 hard drive, but seeing as u said u partitioned them then u see 2, although u said u see 3 - so I can only think that the raid isn`t setup yet.

From the boot into the raid utility, the raid should be setup as raid0 using the 2 harddrives - i.e. by the time vista gets to see it, there should be 1 drive visible, the raid. If the raid is partitioned, then u see 2.

How u see 3 is beyond me unless the raid isn`t setup.

Where`s PV ? lol

Bad explanation from me. Partition has gone now.

3 HHD's.

1 = 250gb - OS (xp)

1 = 250gb - media etc

1 = 750gb - new back-up/storage drive for when i raid0 the two 250 drives.

I have 64bit raid drivers for my blitz on a usb stick.

At the point of (clean) install in vista you can add drivers for raid etc. I browse my pen drive and vista says there are no compatible raid drivers (even thought they are). I force vista to install the driver.

Then I am given the option to pick my hdd to install the OS, only i just installed a raid driver so i want to pick two hdd's to raid0...

At this point i abort as i don't know what to do.

Pick one hdd and vista installs but then how is that raid?

Help :(

Aye PV is the man for this

I think you've gotta set up the raid even before you let windows install boot.. But again never tried it so can't say for sure.

Yes you need to set the RAID up in a RAID BIOS - set it to striping mode (I assume that's what you want) and put both HDD's into a RAID array. If you've done this already I apologise

After this windows should see the 2 drives as one RAID array

Where is this raid bios? I don't understand.

I'm installing vista onto my machine but I have to create the raid in xp first? or in the bios? before the install not during?

Thanks

Edit - I need a floppy :/ i don't think i can do this tonight, too tired and not taking in the info from rast or matt (thanks for the msn'age).

On my old pc you had to hit f5 (or one of the f keys) when the blue screen came up when you first put in the windows disc.. Ya know when its loading up and all the stuff flashes across the bottom... So when the disk is in but before it gets to the proper install. I could be wrong with vista but worth a crack while there isn't anyone with more info here to help.

The RAID BIOS is usually just after the normal BIOS and only appears once you've set SATA to RAID in the normal BIOS

Usually there's like "Press F10 for RAID BIOS" or something like that

Ahhh yeah thats it.. I remember my old 939 Uguru mobo defaulted to that setting and I forgot it EVERY time I reset the CMOS and again when I had to RMA it.. The HDD worked but not properly and made noises and windows ran mega slow with a horrible noise coming out of the speakers. Every time it took me about an hour to remember that I had to change that setting to off again.

Yo. Well since 9:14pm i logged off and thought what the hell... I am now on raid0 with vista ultimate 64bit... Lots to do but big thanks to Kempez and Rast I did use your link however I only repped you the other day, as you were the last person I repped I can't rep you again! (tis oc3d law, not mine!)

Right, off to find x2 drivers and fiddle around... :D

lol, err, i'll ask. I don't go over often after i moved out so i think they like to give me stuff when they see me...

Sorry I wasn't here to give you a hand mate (sickness and major work issues with quality audits), but I'm happy to see you got it sorted anyway. Feel free to ask away if anything else crops up :)

Sorry to hear about your illness :( but I'm happy you are fighting fit again :)

I'm all sorted now, I installed hdtach, obviously having raid0 for the first time i wanted to see some numbers. It doesn't work with wista :/

SANDRA thing work? Vista identified a raid driver issue and told me to go to Intel website and d/l the driver again... Seems to be working fine :eh:
