Sony's PlayStation 5 will "emphasise value" says Sony's Jim Ryan

Going have to disagree on the price of the 4k drive. 4k drives in the market cost at least $200+ and the good ones are way more than that. It will be a pretty big price cut. Even $100 off is quite a bit when you consider that means you can put those savings towards PS Plus, Game, another Controller, or any of the accessories. It's definitely not a "minor aspect" taking the cost from other similar drives.

It's also the reason back in the day the PS3 was so expensive. The Blu Ray drive was absurdly expensive and was the reason Sony failed in the beginning. They don't want to repeat that this time

Now if it's one of those cheap "4k upscaling" players then sure it's not that expensive but I don't think Sony would do that. They would get a lot of crap for that.

I'll probably get the digital version anyway, since physical copies of standard edition games are like 80 EUR in my neck of the woods for no discernable reason whatsoever.

I'm definitely getting the digital version too. I have no need for a 4k player and no place near me I could purchase a disc version of the game. I would have to order it online which defeats the purpose... I would use it for movies but I can just stream it anyway in 4k for most things

You're looking at this from entirely the wrong perspective, a consumers perspective. Keep in mind that blue rays are Sony's copyright, sony makes their own player's and this is likely a player already in market just fitted for the PS5. It has also likely gotten WAY cheaper for Sony to produce these player's likely dropping it extensively from one of their most expensive components down to more of a mid tier.

TBH they can bugger off. Nothing in this world annoys me more than cloak and dagger BS, and sellers who won't put a price on something. Or they put something up for sale and won't discuss the price unless you PM them, then they make you laugh.

But to continually dodge the question whilst saying value? GTFOOH. Sounds just like when Vega was "very nice".

Yeah you can find lots of slimline UHD Blu Ray compatible readers retailing for ~£70, and the actual BOM cost for contracts of this size, or if they sourced internally, would be a fraction of that.

But even so I do think Sony has incentive to have a bigger cost gap with the digital edition beyond the <£50 Microsoft dropped on the Xbone S Digital Edition(Which would be more in line with actual cost reductions), if it means they can both make significantly more profit long term by taking much chunkier shares of software sales over a console lifetime, and use the full disk drive version's premium to offset selling the ODD'less one at a loss if they did sell the top model for a fair bit more, similar to what you see in the car industry(Where they will often charge large premiums for upgrades far beyond their BOM cost to subsidise selling lower end models at a loss or just about even, in order to increase overall market-share).

Except they do not own the copyright. Blu Ray was designed and copyrighted by a group of manufacturers that includes Sony. It's owned by the AACS i believe which includes Panasonic, Toshiba and more.
