Sony has unlocked the PS4's 7th processing core for use by developers in future games.

Not that its a slouch as it is at present eh lol.
I don't get why they don't unlock it all from the off.
In the case of the Xbox One it was so that all games would be able to use voice commands and the Kinect. That was abandoned after Sony's advantage became clear.
I don't know what sony used the 7th core for before now, so some feature might be unused now or Sony has just made the OS require less CPU grunt through optimization or just making it run slower in games.
To me this just screams companies deliberately crippling performance from the start. By adding performance available to devs at a later date than launch seems like it was always kept in reserve for its mid life reawakening. Unfortunately with the resurgence of PC becoming a major gaming platform it seems they have been forced to eek out every extra bit of performance they can find.

Probably something like this. People have speculated that something like this would happen once consoles optimize their OS further. I think it also happened on the PS3/Xbox 360 back in the day.or Sony has just made the OS require less CPU grunt through optimization or just making it run slower in games.

7% can mean the difference between dipping below 30fps and maintaining a steady framerate. Every little bit helps when their precious consoles can't even run the game at 30fps/1080p in 2015, almost 2016 ROFL. I remember in 2007 PC gamers were benchmarking Crysis at 1920x1200.I think MS said that DX12 would provide at most a 7% improvement iirc. Still 7% more performance in a console is quite large when only thing that changes is software. Wonder what the extra core for the PS gives performance wise.
