Something I made that works wonders

Hi all,

New on the forums and just wanted to post details on something simple that really helped keep my CPU temps down on some of the hotter days this year.

I'll start by saying I'm using the Antec Kuhler 620 closed-loop watercooling kit. Now, before I'm told I should post this in the watercooling section (and doubtless be sent right back here for doing so LOL) I'd say that as its a CLOSED water loop, all I personally can affect is the AIR getting to it, hence my choice to post here.

Anyway, on with my post...

I have the Kuhler on the REAR of my case drawing air in using push/pull fans - warm air is expelled from the top and front of the case via fans pulling out.

One of the first issues during a heavy gaming session is that my GPU (a GTX 570) is pushing out hot air right underneath where the CPU is drawing in air - not quite ideal I'm sure you'll agree. Initially I made a basic cowling out of some folded paper to try to separate the air flow to a certain degree...no measurable results, but I think it can't have hurt.

So, what did I do that helped my temps?

I had some of that corrugated hose from an old air con system knocking about. The pipe was just shy of 120mm in diameter...hmmm, my fans are 120mm ones. Basically I took one end of this flexible air con hose and cable tied it in place over the 120mm intake on the back of the case. The other end I simply popped out of the window!

So, here I am in a hot and stuffy room due to my gamer as well as another PC and two monitors all pushing out heat, yet my CPU has it's own nice cool(er) air feed coming from outside! In general gaming I saw temps drop by near 10c! Later in the evening, when my room was still stuffy but the outside air temp had dropped substantially, the cooling effect was even greater! So much so that putting my hand over the top fan (blowing out remember) actually showed that COOLER air was coming out of the PC than the ambient in the room. Nice.

Now, as I generally do any gaming in the eve, and usually in the summer by that time the upstairs room I use is already warm and getting warmer thanks to the PC, this was a real improvement.

So, in summary, a simple bit of air con hose, cabled tied to the back of my case and dangled out the window lowered my CPU temps by over 10c come the evening. Admittedly I'm fairly easily pleased by such things, but this made me happy

Comments and thoughts welcome.

Wouldn't you have to worry about a build up of condensation in the hose incase it makes its way to the case?

Nice lateral thinking though

It's like having a house in the North Pole and having the fridge/freezer sticking out side the house

Well I wouldn't, until someone posted about it of course...

You have a point, though it's not something that overly worries me. I've had the pipe out the window when it's been raining and my PC only steamed lightly, just enough to fog my monitor up slightly, but no biggie

I did actually debate once running a cold feed directly from my air con unit, that'd be cold, dehumidified air directly where it's needed. However the air con unit dumped sooo much heat into the room the PC would be cold, but I'd be passed out through heat exhaustion...

Cheers,
