hey:wavey:, im new to the whole replacing processors thing and i was wondering if you could help me with a few things:

when buying a processor is it only the socket type i need to worry about or is there other things, if so what are they?

when i put in the new processor do i just turn my pc back on and continue or do i need to do something else?

Thanks, all help appreciated

Welcome aboard. :wavey:

The 1st thing, as you've correctly identified is the socket. Obviously LGA775 isn't gonna fit in a AM2 board.

After that you just need to make sure the bios on your matching board is up to the task of your new cpu.

Once youve poped the new cpu in its probably best to clear the CMOS.

Urm, thats about all there is to it.

Thnaks!:)

I looked around and found my bios detials but i ahve no clue how to tell if they will work with the processor:(

It is a dell motherboard: BIOS release date 03/23/2007

BIOS version 2.2.1

im looking at the Intel Q6600, E6850 and E6750 (havent decided yet)

If anyone could give me some help i would be really gratefull:worship:

If it's an honest opinion you want, i would'nt waste any money putting a good cpu into any Dell mobo. You will not be able to set your own perammeters in the bios, because most of a Dell bios cannot be changed by the user. If you want more performance from a rig, then you would be much better off building your own from scratch.
