Sockets S1 M2 Will NOT be LGA..... Phew!

X-Bit Labs reports that the LGA style socket will be for next gen Opteron Server Series processors and not for the mainstream Desktop market.

Personally a sigh of relief, but how long can they resist?

I suspected so considering we've all seen some of the early designs of M2 which were normal style. Would be a big change to make mid-design.

Doesnt surprise me about M2, it only has 940 pins, so seems a bit strange to switch to LGA when you have already used an ordinary socket for that many pins.

Next gen after that will probably be LGA though, if they have already started with the Opterons probably will switch with the desktop as well, probably makes it easier for them once you go over 1000pins as well.

Heres hoping they hold out though, i hate the intel method, the thing that holds down the CPU onto the pins on most boards is asymmetrical which makes it a pain to get good contact very easily.
