So I did something stupid...

Ok, so I was cleaning my fans, these are Bitfenix Spectres, and as you know they have LEDs on them, with connectors that you can either use a jumper on or plug them into one of Bitfenix's LED controllers.
Anyway I dropped one of the jumpers, and couldn't find it, so I thought I'd use a paperclip - You can see where this is going. I, like a complete nonce, thought I'd let the paperclip rest on the case, and when I turned the PC back on, BZzzzzt, Burning smell, and there goes my fan.
Anyone know any tricks to reviving it, or is it totally dead? And in that case, is it for the bin or would Bitfenix be awesome enough to RMA it under warranty?

Cheers guys.

TLDR; Shorted out fan, can it be revived or RMAd?

don't know if it can be revived, but i doubt it. the cable/contacts probably melted, so if you aren't skilled at soldering that thing is for the bin. and even if you manage to solder it, it will probably be so unbalanced, you won't be able to use it.
there is no way they are going to RMA it, you roasted it yourself in probably the most stupid manner possible

I'd say a definite no to any sort of RMA. You messed about and killed it. How I look at it that's your problem not theirs. Not trying to be an ass or anything.

whoa, that is quite a lot more than i pay in germany. my references were non LED versions, but the LED versions are like 1-2 euros more. that's still way less than the UK price.

Aren't Bitfenix Products made in Germany?

Probably about right you get them cheaper over there, as you'd avoid most transportation costs.

based in taiwan according to their website. you pay about 2.35 euros more per fan. but in general i think in the UK prices are higher than over here.

I think the central office is Taiwan, but they're owned by Caseking afaik, so it's quite possible they're made in Germany.

Maybe the rep will come on and tell us sometime :)

Anyway, we've digressed!

Aha, well they LOOK like Spectre PROs, but the box just says Spectre, and they are 120mm,yes.

So I'm not sure which it is. I distinctly remember the postage being high and it pissing me off though lol.

Anyway I'll take your advice and ask in the support forum what they think I should do, maybe they offer a repair service, I dunno.

Moving the focus of the thread slightly, in the almost 100% case that I'll have to get a new fan(s), what do you guys recommend that has LEDs on them?
I like the look of the Spectres, with the smoked clear plastic, but if I'm going to buy new ones I'd prefer ones that perform better.
SP/AF120s and NFF12s I hear are the best, but neither have LEDs I dont think.
What do you guys recon?

Yeah, I remember looking at the PROs, but they dont do them In orange, its the same for the Silverstone AP120s that James recommended.
I suppose I could just get some plain black ones and then use an LED strip, but that's not quite the same....

So I've decided to try and fix it....

Off the blade comes....

You can see that two of the LED wires have come off..

While I doubt re-soldering those will fix it, its worth seeing what happens.

If that doesnt work, I have a few other fans lying around that I can "borrow" the cables from :p

Xigmatek do some orange LED fans and NZXT will have one out soon (Edit; or already ?):

Might be worth it to check those out :)

Oh, cool, I have an NZXT case, so they'd match quite well!
Reviews for them are quite good too, especially the 140mm, which is what the front fan mounting on my case can support.
Thanks Feronix :)

P.S. I managed to get the other fan working, but the ALL of the LEDs are ballsed, so I assume a cap blew or something. And without the lighting theres no point using it over the fans that came with the case tbh.
