-Sigh- I just don't get it.

I dunno guys. I upgraded to a 780i, and a 7800GTX on vista 32 and I still get frame lag sometimes. I just play cod4 on 1024 x 768 with like 2AA and the rest of the settings default. using the cg_drawfps ingame i see that most of the time im running at 90fps. but every few mins I dip down to 40-50 and the fps thing turns red. What the heck do I have to do to avoid the jumps, so sick if it. I feel like I'm never on the cutting edge. Money's no object, I'll save.

i'd say the same sounds like something is periodically accessing things, it could be hard drive stuttering or something. i've had this issue before, a big thing to turn off if you use msn is usnsvc.exe this makes my hard drives go nuts for no apparent reason whenever it feels like it, and it continues to run even after msn is gone.. bloody annoying if you ask me, should be removed altogether.

7800gtx isn't cutting edge, but you shouldn't be dropping from 90 to 40~50 without some kind of reason if its not the game.

deffinately something software based i'd say mate

Indeed, need a full breakdown of all the hardware installed, all the software, OS, drivers etc..

More detail, the easier it`ll be to sort it out, but it`s definately requiring some improvement.

Although it aint up2d8 gear, it should atleast kick some butt.

If nothings interrupting with random drive stutters it could be running out of ram.

shouldn't happen with vistas memory allocating thing, but still possible.

Well that was a silly typo lol. What I meant to say was an 8800gtx, whoops.

I'm at work right now but as for the rest of the hardware lets see..

So evga 780i mobo

crucial ballistix 6400 2gb (2x1gb).

200gb seagate hd.

artic freezer 7 pro

i just use the sound on the board.

a dvd r drive.

windows vista ultimate 32

the drivers im using for video are 175.12 i think.

19 inch dell screen.

I dont have antivirus running just spybot's teatimer and windows defender.

I definitely agree on getting better/more ram. because when i alt tab out of cod4 i see that the ram thing is almost full taking up about 1800 of the ram, not leaving much room for anything else.

And a better hd, since that one is old and its ide, Sata is best right?

Thanks for help guys.

The 175.12 drivers would be the drivers compatible with the 9xxx-series, though "supporting" the 8xxx-series, or am I wrong?

Something else I forgot to mention.. I just recently moved up to windows vista and im always paranoid about internet activity on my computer so. In xp i used to check the connection dialog a bunch, you know, the one with the SENT and RECEIVED thing. well Im pretty sure that even with heavy gaming I would only have like maybe 200,000-500,000 bytes in the sent or received thing after a few hours... like 6-10. But now after just 1 or 2 hours I check it and its off into the 150,000,000 bytes its ridiculous. Anything you guys can recommend to find out whats spamming off all that stuff.. it makes me feel like im lagging! Ahhhhh. And also about the ram, should I just buy 1gb more of the same memory? would that work? or do i need to increment in pairs? like put another 2gb in even though it wont use all of it because the vid card and stuff takes it up...

@Phoenix - I'm not sure. if that's the case I should probably downgrade to 169's or whatever they are, correct?

truthfully I dont think im all too happy with this 8800gtx. sometimes i feel like my 2 XFX8600 xxx editions were working better.

Maybe it's SuperFetch ...

I have little experience with vista but it seems it's a cache problem (the OS is probably using the pagefile). I'd disable SuperFetch and the pagefile (leave it at a couple of megs as disabling it completely may lead to system crashes... it did on my computer) then try CoD4. If it doesn't happen then that was your problem.

Correct.

Stuttering can be caused by a fragged page file. How ur gonna check that out on a standard vista install, god only knows.

okay so when i get home from work ill try to disable superfetch... how about that pagefile though, anyone second that thought?

Well if youve got anyone that can lend you another 2gb ram give it a go :)

I know people who've had this before..
