Should i wait?

I am going to buy a new system when my next paycheck arrives. So i was just wondering instead of buying the 2500k should i wait for Ivy Bridge? I am getting really unsure about this

If you are in no rush then I say wait, you might as well wait and go with a faster Ivy CPU and a PCI-E 3.0 mobo. Rather than buy a Sandy CPU and a PI-E 2.0 mobo now because come the next time you upgrade your GPU you will have to upgrade your CPU and mobo to get full speed out of it.

My 2 cents.

Any rumors of when it will arrive? And prices? because if i end up buying p67 + 2500k i might as well build a new rig for ivy

They are rumored for between August and September.

I reckon prices will be about the same as SB and current Z68 mobos are now.

If you buy a P67/Z68 board now you will be able to put a Ivy CPU in it but you wont get PCI-E 3.0 unless you wait buy and buy a PCI-E 3.0 mobo. Seen as they are not that far away I would wait unless you need a new PC ASAP.

I think will buy 2500k, since i can't play any games anymore, and all the games i can play, i am either tired of or i have played them to completion

Fair enough, if you ain't gonna be gaming the PCI-E 3.0 ain't gonna be any loss to you.

I don't think there will be a big increase in performance, I reckon it will be the same as it was when 2.0 came out. Only 2-3 FPS increase over the 1.0, so yeah.

This is technology, and just saying "wait for this" & "wait for that" will accomplish nothing. There will ALWAYS be something better to wait for. Just get the 2500k and have fun.

I know, it was just because Ivy Bridge was just around the corner, but i usually say if there is more than 31 days of waiting take what you can get

I had the same decision on my hands, i thought i should wait for the new LGA2011 however i really was getting tired of my Core2duo, and i was in love with the current g1 assassin mobo from Gigabyte so i specced up a good build and just went for it. Loving it now.

I have a distinct feeling Ivybridge will be the new 1366.

IE - not cheap and very high end.

Otherwise what would be the point in releasing it so soon? I mean you know Intel. Never give anything away or release something unless they really have to. Fact with the 1366 was even at its demise it was still the most powerful architecture on the face of the earth (well, right up until SB arrived). It had no competition, hence the very long life and very few CPUs releasded on it (920 930 40 50 60 70 80 in over three years).

I have a feeling Ivy will be Intel's next "killer app" and will come with killer prices to boot.

Price to performance it will not perform any faster than Sandybridge. Remember kids, you get what you pay for an there's no such thing as a free lunch. Unless it was a lot faster than SB then what would be the point?

LGA2011 is the new 1366

But no doubt that ivy will be expensive

I've been hearing things along these lines with the next releases, which is making me think I'll skip upgrading them too.

PCIe 3.0 is the buzzword, but we're not seeing anything coming to handle the probable x32 slots that it's supposedly capable of.

Perhaps the X79 will be the X58, outstanding performance pointed at workstation and professional, based on the best available at the time... then perhaps to be canned a year or so afterwards when enthusiast/mainstream "85 chipset" comes out with a few and lesser features, but x32 capable and 'plays games as-good'.

.. oh and of course a new cpu slot

6 months is an eternity in the tech world rather than around the corner

Ivy Bridge is mainstream in the way that Sandy Bridge is.

The Sandy Bridge E is the new 1366, its on the new LGA 2011 socket, with the quad channel memory support

Ivy Bridge, if its the same price as Sandy at launch, will have an extra 20% performance or so, plus it will be cooler. Might overclock better too, its Intel going to 22nm, while Sandy Bridge/E remain at 32nm.

They will probably release Ivy Bridge-E

That's what I'm thinking, but it may have a different name, though that one makes sense. I also wonder whether it needs a new socket, or whether LGA 2011 will be able to handle 22nm in the same way as LGA 1155 can. If it does, then we are in for some good times.
