Should I upgrade...

Hey All,

The big question, should I upgrade...

I currently have a Opteron 146 CABYE 0540 FPAW running at 2.8ghz for over a year on stock volts, also a DFI SLI-DR motherboard and Corsair Value Select 2 x 1GB PC3200 running at 254mhz for also around a year.

Now everything has been running rock solid for months and I am quite happy with the performance of my system but I realise the value of all my components are dropping as I type this. I will be wanting to play all the latest games next year (will be upgrading my 7800gtx no matter what) so want a system that will do me for another year just like my current one has.

What prices should I expect for my cpu, motherboard and ram and what C2D spec would you recommend (havent a clue on C2D to be honest).

Thanks alot, Sam

Tis a toughie. Upgrade now and get a few bob or later and lose loads on the current part but more is out.

I'd say now is a good time to sell with C2D's dropping in price soon and the 8800 series pricing down a bit.

Prices - very tough to call but:

CPU: £60ish

DFI: £40-50

7800: £100-120

RAM: £150 (DDR is expensive now)

As for C2D well...again hard to call

An E6300 (and clock it high) with nice (read expensive DDR1000+) RAM

Or an E6600/6700 with half-decent 6400 RAM

A 680i based board

8800GTS

Of course this is IMO

Cheers for that Kemp,

I have just quickly worked it out and its going to cost me around £250 to totally upgrade.

Not bad considering that would be a new cpu, motherboard, ram and gfx :yumyum:

I will see how much cash I get for xmas and work out what I am going to do from there ;)

I can't comment on the UK prices, but Kemp will be pretty close to the ball park.

I also agree with Kemp's list of goodies, but the new DFI LANParty UT ICFX3200-T2R RD600 may also an alternative when released.

Remarkable.. looking at the system in terms of u`r profile, it`s quite a mean beast, with sub 30 PI score, it`d be better than alot of people (outside of this forum) have at home.

.. and to be fair, it`ll play games very nicely for those not being `in the know` about recent releases tech-wize.

Bearing all that in mind, what could he get as a price for the complete unit (prehaps if he re-housed it in a case, if he likes his case) ?

What I mean by example, is the likes of u`r PCWorlds, sell a hell of alot worse units for £750+, I`m sure, and no where near the quality of components.

Yep but I'd shame myself if I even counted anything PC World "sell" (meaning rip-off) into any advice I gave

lmao, ya ya ok, but what sorta price would a system that could perform like this go "in a shop that sells pcs ready made" (but most likely lesser quality items) ?

Better ? ;)

Do you lot think if I just upgraded my cpu to a dual core opteron and got a 8800gts I will see a good difference ???

The 8800GTS will show a lot of difference, but dunno so much about the DC...although some games are optimised for it

Then again in the future more games will be so...

I'd consider importing stuff from the US, im prolly gonne :p

It will work out like £100 cheaper in some cases which really annoys me :damn:

I spose Hyper, u gotta bear this in mind also. Q. Do I pump monies into the system I`ve got, DC opty and 8800 being mentioned.. with these monies, would I be better considering leaning toward an Intel mobo (sorry for swearing) plus the max cpu I can get with the same budget. --- keeping my present gfx, drives, etc - then ask myself about a gfxcard l8r on ?

Having said that, if and when u may chose to jump to Intel, u`r 8800 will gladly go with u. It`d just be the outlay for the cpu that could be considered ""wasted"".

What are these amd dc 5x00+ processors like ?

Tricky tricky.
