Should I change my Memory ?

Ive just built a cheapish new rig around an opteron 146.

I stole the memory out of my old P4 2.4c Rig which is 2x512Mb OCZ 4200 EL which was great and aided me to up my FSB a lot and OC my P4 to 3.15Ghz.

I read that i would get better performance from my opty if I had tighter timings rather than higher FSB speed. At the moment I can get my ram to 2.5-3-3-7 at 245Mhz but I cant get it to play games at 1T setting. I think it may be a voltage problem, my motherboard is an Asrock duel 939 which doesnt have many options for memory voltage, I have it set to high but i think that is only 2.7v.

Im wondering whether i would be better with some memory that works a very low latencies and with lowish volts ( <2.7) ?

Hmm the trouble is that with those kind of Voltages you won't be getting a HUGE OC out of your RAM

I wouldn't have thought 2T vs 1T would make such a huge difference, but some RAM that is TCC5/TCCD based like OCZ Platinum Rev 2 would maybe be ok :)

I agree with kemp... You just need a smidge more voltage out of that ram to make it perform in its optimal range. With that mobo it's going to be hard to find a really good set of sticks that are going to clock well with only 2.7v.

U might try and find an old set of OCZ Plat. Rev 2 with TCCD and hope that @ 2.7v works as if it were running at 2.9v.

Thanks, I sure I read the TCCD didn't like high voltages so I though I may be ok with my 2.7v cap. I saw some 2nd hand Geil UltraX which looked nice, I'll also look out for some OCZ Plat. Rev 2.

In Sandra the 1T setting gets me 7228/7164 ish compared to 5933/5930 as 2T, though I havent benched in in any games yet due to the annoying freezing.

Ur right TCCD doesn't thrive on high voltage yet it doesn't run at it's max potential until it's got 2.9v, so there is still some juice left to be squeezed from those baddies :)

I got my ocz booster working eventually, what a hassel that was. Anyway i turned my voltage up to 2.8 and I was able to run 1T no problem. The thing is i had a couple of reboots happen 2 days ago then yesterday my pcwent off during a game and woudnt post. Turns out my psu has died. Im thinking its the ocz booster.

The OCZ booster does tend to cause some problems but it might just have been that your PSU couldn't take the strain of the extra voltage going through the 3.3v rail :(
