Sell my 7970?

Hey guys,

I have an XFX Reference Design 7970, and I'm unhappy with the temperatures. It hits late 80's really easily, and sounds like a leafblower while doing it. Also seeing the 680 being a fair bit quicker at stock. I'm thinking I should maybe flog my 7970, and get something like the Windforce 3x OC card for around £400.

What are your views?

ummm, is it overclocked? It shouldnt really be getting that hot, do you have good airflow inside the case?

I have a 7950 overclocked to 1ghz, RAM maxed out on the reference cooler and mine doesnt go above like 70 during gaming play, 75 benching

the 7970 is pretty nice...
but if you are unhappy might aswell change it. (if you can afford it)
the 680 is a beast :)

You could also consider getting an aftermarket cooler from arctic cooling,it fits the reference design.
Temps will drop and noise is almost non existant with these coolers.
They are a little expensive, but dont think youll get more than 250£ for the reference hd7970,so maybe it could be an option to keep the 7970 a fair bit longer.

I would suggest you either re apply thermal compound or go with the above

Thanks for the input guys. I'd thought about the Arctic Cooling cooler, but I'm a little worried about installing it. I guess I'm thinking I need to OC it quite a bit to get the performance I'm expecting, and the 680 seems to get there on stock (from what I've seen).

If you are going to go with a different card I would recommend the GTX 670 over the 680, it is cheaper and gives roughly the same performance :)

The 7970 will actually OC beyond the performance the 680 could achieve even when under max OC. My advice to you get the aftermarket AC for your 7970 and OC it and realize better and more quite performance than the 680 could get.

For the price difference, the 670 performs amiably compared to the 670. It basically renders the 680 pointless.
And yes, from what I understand, the 7970 can be made to overtake the nVidia cards, but only under extreme cooling.

Stock cooling OCed the 7970 is faster than the 680 & the only reason the 680 can claim dominance is cause it is clocked higher when both cards are @ stock for stock reference clocks. The 680 is faster than the 670 but the 7970 is the more powerful card when max potential is considered.

When overclocked the 670/7950/680/7970 all perform basically the same depending on the game. So it doesn't actually matter which one you get if you are overclocking from that perspective. Silicon lottery is the deciding factor.

From the reviews I've seen it's pretty standard for reference 7970s to hit 75-80C (depending on overclock) even with the best airflow so I'm not surprised you are getting about 10C more.

A quick look around for used 7970s suggests that you might get about £250ish for it as a ballpark figure so you'd have to fork out an extra £30-70ish to get a 670 which is actually similar to the cooler which costs about £55 quid.

If you can sell your 7970 for nearer £300 then I'd get the 670 - no temp issue and a new card to boot.
If you think you'll get closer to £200 for it then I'd get the cooler. TBH the 670 is probably going to be noticeably louder than the 7970 with cooler anyway!

Getting the 680 is definitely not worth it imo, you'd have to pay £150 on top of what you'd get for selling the 7970 for no appreciable difference in performance!

Flog the 7970 and buy a 670 TOP DCII, It's faster than a 680 in benchmarks, cooler, quieter and overclocks like a beast, plus they are around £350 now :P In my eyes it's a no brainer :P

Well, as M&P has said, it depends on how much he can get for his 7970. If he can only get around £250, than the £350 for the 670 TOP DCII wouldn't seem worth it imo.
