SecureDrives' SSD self-destructs when you text it a specific code word if the drive is stolen or lost.

now what happens if it just messes up one day and self destructs without you wanting it too.. not much you can do about that id imagine. and i doubt waranty covers you if it self destructed either.

also kinda have to wonder how long before viruses will be made to try and make them self destruct.

That's a great point. Since it self destructs using a code sent via (presumably) a mobile phone, someone could potentially spoof the request with any device.

The 256-bit encryption will make it more difficult though and you'd probably have to be sitting quite close to the SSD in order for it to receive and decode the message.

ok, so you buy the drive, and it's stolen, so you think you will need to track it down and be very close to the drive to destruct it? How will that help anything?

Anyways, this isn't anything I ever want to buy.

maybe mi5/mi6 should think about getting some then if one was to forget there laptop and lose it on the tube it mite not be the end of the world lol :)

I was just making an assumption. Being able to send a code to the SSD over a large distance will make it quite vulnerable (imo).

SecureDrive probably have other measures in place, but it won't be immune to everything. I may be wrong, but someone will probably find a vulnerability and take advantage of it.
