Samsung Phone fire in Childs bed

Okay, maybe not a flag-ship phone, but tbh phone and texts is a little too basic. I think all kids of at least middle class families should have a phone with internet capabilities. Phoning and texting is becoming more and more obsolete as social networks become more popular.

Why only middle class ? BTW I hate the english/british archaic class system, Needs abolishing, anyway getting off topic.

A phone is there for exactly that, Phoning so your parents know where you are etc...A 13 year old kid does not need more than that.

Maybe once you start going to college or uni then yes but middle/high school ? Just no.

A mate of mine bought a €130 Nokia Lumia 630 with WP8.1. It's got a simple Snapdragon 400 quad core, 512MB RAM, a 5Mp camera and 3G support (Lumia 635 even does LTE). Says the user experience is butter smooth and it does everything he needs (including social media, videos and music) and that battery life is amazing compared to his old Androids. This is the happiest I've ever seen a person with a newly purchased phone, not even exaggerating. He's 21.

Why does a 14 year old girl need a €550 phone with a Snapdragon 801 and 2GB RAM again? :\

The reason I said "at least middle class families" is because they can probably easily afford phones. I just didn't want to seem like a snob saying that all people should have phones, because not all people have the money. Also, I didn't really mean anything by the class system. It just seems like the best way to generalize a group of people of similar wealth.

I agree an S4 is way overkill, but yes something like a 520 or 630 would be totally fine for someone of her age. I'm just saying that only phone and text functionality is pretty meagre.

Yeah I agree there. I mean, something like the phones we used to have as kids are a bit difficult to even find in actual shops these days. If you do, they either don't cost shit, or almost as much as a low-end smartphone (such as the Lumia 630).

I don't mind kids even being on Facebook or Twitter on their phone (unless it's during classes or something), but there are so many drawbacks. For instance, they rather sit on the couch playing addictive mobile games than actually playing with friends. By that I do not mean online games

It's like most teens can't even live without their phones anymore these days. They have to take selfies with everything and everyone and literally every move they make needs to be posted online. Even in social interactions they're too busy filming what they're doing rather than actually whitnessing it, and that just makes me feel a little sad.

Gotta admit that's not just teens though. My dad was looking to buy a Galaxy S3/S4 (can't quite remember) about a year back cause he wanted a high end phone. Now, my dad doesn't really need a high-end phone either for things such as Facebook and Whatsapp, and non-hardware-intensive games like Wordfeud, but he has a friend that always has the latest iPhone, so he wants a fast phone. Anyway, I eventually talked him into at least getting the Nexus 4 that basically had the same hardware, but for €100 less at the time.

It's happened multiple times that we're having a conversation and he just randomly pulls out his phone and starts texting. When I then ask him what I just said he replies with something that sounds vaguely like what I in fact did say, but meaning something completely different.

That's the point where I ususally just walk away. If a person is not interested enough to listen to what I'm saying to them, then I don't care enough to tell them, even though the topics were about things that he brought up and I wanted to give some helpful input.

TL;DR, Actually a lot of people buy phones that they don't need these days and smartphones are in a way ruining certain face-to-face communication scenarios.

I attest to the non-need of high end phones, I'm currently using a very secondhand HTC desire (the origional) and it works fine for most things, the only reason I would upgrade is for a larger/higher res screen and better camera, I also love phones with easily replaceble parts thet don't require you to break seal/unscrew stuff, for instance I just changed to a new (and official) battery after my current one started to stop holding charge, and it cost £20 through a shop, for years more life from a perfectly useable phone.

I got my first phone when I was 16 which I paid for myself. This was when phones started becoming mainstream. Couldn't afford a Nokia 7210 though.

When I was 13 phones where connected to cables and TV's didn't have remotes
I was using a Nokia 3510i up until about 2.5 years ago when it finally died

That video only tells me one thing, they are trying to dodge responsibility. Also what's with the dad "Maybe they should have large warning labels like cigarette packets" so now we have to "Idiot proof" everything!?! I say just remove all warning labels and let nature take it's course. Seriously I'm starting to believe that we as a species are de-evolving.

More warning sign is stupid, people just need to be sensible, if you're gonna buy 3rd party batteries look at reviews, research etc. that way it's hard to get a duff product, this whole thing seems like a case of someone can't be bothered to research replacement batteries so buys the cheapest stuff on the market.
The same thing happens with PC mice, like the RAT 5, the price is reasonable at first glance the specs seem fine to any layman and it looks nice, but they don't research and find that less than a year after purchase their mouse craps out, outside warranty and then they realise their mistake.
