From the google hard drive study:-

"drives that are cooled excessively actually fail more often than those running a little hot"

Interesting, not sure exactly what excessive cooling is without reading the full artcle. I've only ever had drive failures when the drives got too hot (early days) or they'd taken a knock (accidentally dropped doh)

All I do is ensure there's air flow over the drives, usually via a standard 120mm fan running at a slow speed. Guess I just have the computers in a very cold room - though they usually seem to warm it up quite nicely.

I fired up the machine earlier, one drive was reading 7c - it didn't feel that cold at all, so maybe the drives just miss-read...a lot.

Oh, this PC (my gateway) has been on all night and the drives don't spin down, yet the drive temps are still 19c, 19c and 21c - can't check the RAID set though. Also, the machine is currently doing a virus scan so the drives (well, one at a time) are actually working too. This room feels warm to me *, I'm not dressed for the cold or anything like that. In fact, I'm almost inclined to open a window to let some air in...

It does sound like the temp readings from those Samsung drives isn't entirely accurate. I on the other hand I'm starting to feel cold - I hate the Winter, 20C all year round would do me nicely.

Tell ya what, the idea of having a heated & covered walkway from my drive to the back door is very appealing at the moment lol. Bloody freezing this eve *
