Samsung 850 EVO vs PRO

Hey guys,

So I've heard some things regarding Samsung's EVO and PRO drives... For instance, that the EVO's used to have an firmware update that pretty much bricked/killed the drive itself. And that the PRO had something similar...

Now which one would you guys go with?... Since the EVO is quite a lot cheaper than the PRO. Is the PRO worth the extra money? Is it worth the 10 year warranty? Yes? No?...

What do you guys say and/or recommend?...

It was only the 840 Evos. I'd probably opt for a Crucial drive though since they got some amazing prices. But if the firmware update issue doesn't worry you and you get a new drive then I'd get the Evo. The pro isn't worth the extra money imo for the tiny speed increase

The 850s are much more reliable. Look at other manufacturers too though, Crucial and Kingston are personal faves.

Im pretty sure it was the firmware for 840s that bricked ssds.

Ive been using a 256gb 850 pro for best part of a year with firmware update and havent had any issues :) same goes for my more recent 1tb 850 pro, but there is other brands out there if your worried.

Also I'd like to add that my 840 Evos (with the firmware that apparently degrades read/write speeds) are as fast as the day I installed them. IDK why.

Well, the degradation problem was with the 840 Evo's. They brought out firmware updates but as far as I heard from people I know that had them, it helped for a bit and then they'd degrade again.

A firmware update for the 850 Pros was released just after the drives were launched (a couple weeks I think) and people who updated ended up with a bricked drive. Samsung pulled the update pretty quickly but a good couple of users had to RMA their drives and lost their data. (Source)

Granted they are only two major issues on a long path of success for Samsung, but stuff like that makes me personally just go for the Crucial drives. Smash them in your system and leave them be. Never really hear anything bad or problematic about them and you can't really beat them for the price.

I've never updated my firmware so I don't know for sure if mine came with the bad one but in 1TB Evo I have no had a single issue with mine in terms of speed or reliability.

Yeah I haven't update mine either, there's not been a need to do it.
