Safe to clean?

I have a Q6600 that was sent to me to test for someone and well I was shocked when i opened the packaging.There is a fair bit of TIM on the underside of the chip and the only thiing I have to clean it is acrticlean.Is that ok to use on the face of the chip?

I have got some of the TIM remover/alcohol on the pins/holes and it's been fine. I just left it to dry, it didn't seem like it was dry but it was, left a stain like effect on it. Worked fine for me, I guess using something small like a cotton bud will do.

i wouldnt use articcleaner as it is a primer

use isopropyl alcohol as this will just evaporate after cleaning

I used regular TIM cleaner on a mates one after he put his TIM covered fingers on the wrong side! DOH

I would advise leaving a long time to ensure everything is dry.

Look on the bright side its easier to clean contact pads than the old pins themselves !!

Its now cleaned and is sitting behind my rad fans to dry off!That's a good point,I am glad it was not an AMD chip.He sent me this to test for him as he could not get his rig to run stable at any speed,after looking at this chip I think I know why

I would be surprised he could even boot.

Saying that on my old E6600 i managed to shift it in the socket just enough when popping the cooler on that it would boot them randomly BSOD.

Popped it out the socket for a reseat and all was fine !!

The underside is merely pcb with 'copper' contacts, it should be fine (if it was b4), just be careful of the mounted bits in the middle.

One thing that concerns me is if this is what the chip was like,what does the socket look like?

I do seem to remember reading a while back that you could do some interesting things to your chip by deliberately covering up pin locations and connecting some pins together.

I think it was on AMD chips, i'll see if i can find the article.......

i guess you can do that, all the chips are water tight and you shudnt have any problems if you dry it off well

I've always just used the Iso Alcohol for CPU & GPU cleaning and it works fine, just make sure its all evaporated b4 passing a current through it, alot cheaper than the Arctic stuff too.

well,it dried off fine and was sitting happily at 3.4 for a day on prime95 so he will be happy

Couldn't see water getting off thermalpaste

Well, I have always found water to weaken the paste then use a normal kitchen cloth to remove the remaining paste.

Never been worried.. just make sure it is dry before use.

Nice on Nepas! Love Q6600s! They are going down in my book of really good chips - along with a 900Mhz PIII.

Am glad to get my own chip back in!was a bit nervous stressing someone elses chip just in case,lol
