Ryzen Threadripper will release this summer

Well Kaap can finally be happy. 64 PCIe lanes.

Still no release date though. Annoyingly

Think someone has made a mistake and it should be 56 PCI-E lanes as Threadripper is basically 2 normal Ryzen CPUs together.

It would be nice if it does have 64 PCI-E lanes but I will still be looking at the 7980XE with 18/36 cores/threads and a higher clockspeed for my next PC.

AMDs official slides say 64. So you can finally have 4 GPUS running x16
I think the multi threading performance on Ryzen will be better if not equal even with 4 less threads. But probably not for gaming. Not that any game would even notice those threads. Would be cool if they allow users to overclock specific cores to see if in a gaming situation, you can overclock half the cores at high clockspeeds but when you want raw power you just load a different BIOS profile. Doubt we will get this though

Edit just read elsewhere that Threadripper will have 48 PCI-E lanes dedicated to mGPU, the other 16 are for use elsewhere.


As to overclocking individual cores you can do that now with a decent motherboard, unfortunately this gives very little extra performance to the selected cores.

What will be interesting is the relative price of the platforms X299 vs X399. With AM4 motherboards we have generally seen a decent discount over similarly specced Z270 boards. I wonder if the trend will continue?

Well I am still sticking to my $1000 price tag for the 16 core. If 1800X costs $500 then by simple means of maths I say that should equate to $1000. I know that logically it may not happen because of the sheer size.

But yeah, anything up to $1200 and Intel are bang in trouble. AMD have no real need to charge more than that tbh, especially if they want to pee with the big boys and start seeing their chips in Dells, Alienwares and so on. That is what they desperately need. To be taken seriously.

Looking at the sheer heffa size of it (it looks like that socket could take FOUR dies, not just two !) they may have some PLX wizardry going on. I can't see why they would lie about it.

Edit. Or the extra lanes could quite simply be on the board's chipset itself.

CPU itself has PCI lanes. The on die SOC also has PCI lanes. So they probably just combined them

The real point is 64(48) is a big improvement and will put pressure on intel to up the number on their CPUs.

The number of PCI-E lanes is something intel have been really dragging their feet on with all their CPUs.
 
That is one big CPU.
16 cores may be very narrow for actual rendering farm but enough for household usages. Do you know what does these rendering farm look like? What I received, each nodes have 2 X E5 8 cores. With AMD's design plus 3M's solutions, same area, can fill MORE or having additional space for few more desks.

I am not looking for X models as I seldom like overclock a bit, If a typical system can be built within USD 700, If adding 400 more USD to get 8 more actual cores, Then I shall agree.

P.S: You better check which software you like to speed up, or need fancier before doing it.
 
I really wished they had a release date; if they'll be as cheap as rumoured they may force SKL-X to come down in price. A big maybe, though.
 
One of the videos I watched on Computex has stated they will be 64 pcie lanes and they are due for release around August and as I was watching happy hour this morning RSI has stated that Star Citizen is going to love cores once Item 2.0 is implemented so these chips will deffo be good for those of us into SC

I am sure it will love cores, but I don't think it'll love these behemoth chips with 10-16 cores:p
And if it does.. that's super impressive multi-threading.
 
Now it's looking like that Ryzen Threadripper is going to put the "New" Intel Skylake-X to shame.

You only get 48 PCI-E lanes dedicated to mGPU, the other 16 are for use elsewhere.

As to Skylake-X, I will take the 7980 XE every time as at least it will manage a decent clockspeed to drive mGPU.

There is nothing wrong with Ryzen but the best CPUs in the range are the 6 and 8 core ones which offer fantastic value and performance for the money.
