Rise of the Tomb Raider DirectX 12 Performance Update

Not played it for a while but based of my experience, SLI does not offer better frame rates in terms of max but should offer a slightly higher, minimum and average.

I might give it a try next week and see what the Frame Rate is like, as before they started patching the game, at 4K maxed out I was hitting up to 40fps with SLI 980Ti's but on average it was 30fps so no better, than a single card.

When they started patching it the performance dropped in terms of smoothness etc, it was turned in to a stuttery mess.

Are you just running the inbuilt benchmark tool with the settings left on the presets, such as High etc?

Also incase you are using it, turn off shadowplay as that affects the performance based off my experience by up to 15%.

Our benchmarks were done in gameplay, not using the benchmarking tool using the presets stated in the review.

In our testing we do not have the Geforce Experience or AMD Raptr installed.

Sadly at this time I don't have two matching GPUs to test that.

I personally would be very curious to see how DX12 and DX11 compare when using Dual GPUs.

I tested this on Friday night and, in a few words, SLI support is very good to great. DX11 is good, while DX12 is even better. Single Nvidia GPU, it's a wash between DX11 and DX12. Multiple GPU, while both are good, the lead is definitely in favor of DX12.

I would link to my post on OCN, but I don't know if that is allowed. You can find it though, same username.

Things are looking better, I am now getting nearly 60fps at Very High Settings with Vsync off and FXAA on in DX11.

Not sure about DX12 as Fraps and Shadowplay both don't want to tell me the FPS but it felt very stuttery and there did seem to be some frame droppage occuring.

Think I will stick to DX11 for this game but I am happy I can actually appear to play it again at 4K.

I just patched the game to the latest version and benched DX12 SLI with two 980TIs. Guess what: The game is capped to 30FPS. Eh, what?? Yes, 30FPS, but is does indeed use two GPUs opposed to the situation before the patch where it was not capped to 30FPS, but used only one GPU.
Switching back to DX11 runs smooth without a FPS cap.

Can anyone confirm that?

Settings are all maxed, except AA which is set to SMAA. I play at 1600p in windowed fullscreen mode.

If mGPU actually is implemented fairly well, under DX12 compared to DX11, you should see much better results. Since the CPU is not as bogged down with only a single core to hand out all those tasks too. DX12 should really help minimums mostly I would take an educated guess on. And on the other non FPS side, help frametimes a lot too since more cores can hand out more tasks efficiently(or more so) resulting in a more smooth gaming experience with the added benefit of better minimum FPS.

Hi Breit !
I didn't see that with my 970s in SLI

For those who want some numbers with SLI I take a screenshot with DX11 vs DX12 with GTX 970 (ASUS OC EDITION) and with the settings used (but sorry it's in french)
