Removing Ivy Bridge IHS and replacing Intel TIM to get better temps??

So I was looking around and saw an article where people were removing the IHS from their IB CPU's and replacing the TIM Intel uses with better stuff and either re-lidding the CPU or putting a water block directly on the die and seeing 20-30 degree Celcius drops on the CPU's. Has anyone here tried this? I do not plan on doing this myself, just wanted everyones opinion.

I need moar data :(
And even if it is true...I sure as hell am not going to try it! I like my £250 processor to, you know, process stuff :(

I don't blame you there Josh. I have a 2700k sitting around and I need a motherboard for it since it was given to me. But I am working on a Core i5 3750k for a client and just was looking around for safe temps for IB and I stumbled upon that.

same goes for the odd temp reads on sandy. the wide spread temp gaps are also attributed to the
union of the heat spreader to die.
on ivey, the spread is a .00065" difference in the IHS and the die. so something trying to bridge the
gap and allow heat transferance. hence the big decrease in temperature. why do so many peeps have
TIM errors and high temps? why do peeps reccomend TIM re-application? usually too large of a gap
between the HSF mount and the chip heat spreader...
i've seen it here countless times, "my temps are way too high!"... answer is: re-TIM and remount.

Bah well, if something goes wrong, just get your soldering iron to the chip until it starts crunching numbers again. I mean, the stuff Intel do can't be that complicated, right?

Yea I've seen a few different people do this. Some have seen barely any improvement and others have seen several degrees. Obviously very risky but it does look very fun :D

Airdeano you do realize we are speaking of removing the IHS from the chip itself completely and replacing the TIM Intel uses between the die and IHS with something better and either replacing the IHS or mounting a water block directly to the die right?
