Hi guys

I will be purchasing a new SATA drive, 200gb is the amount I need, but Im after the fastest and most reliable! 200gb SATA drive there is, so hit me with recommendations! It will be used for Music, Movies, large files etc

the ones that have caught my eye so far.

Samsung SpinPoint P SP2004C 200GB SATA-II 8MB

Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 Plus 200GB ST3200822AS SATA 8MB Cache

Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 200GB 2000JS SATA-II 8MB Cache

Hitachi Deskstar T7K250 NCQ 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache

:D

thanks

Luff my Hitachi Desktar. Beautiful drive.

I agree with Kemp...DeskStar's the way to go :).

EDIT: Now that I realize you had a list up tehre, I also highly reccomend the Western Digital.

I have 2 of the WD caviar sata II drives. They are very quiet and they are ok I guess. I would go 100% with seagate but they all all good hd's there

Hey Falcon mate - you back home now? Nice ta see's ya :D :wavey:

hm... yeah i am back since 5 weeks now... My PC is still not here. It will arrive next monday (after 9 weeks delivering time)

If you don't mind another hundred gigabytes (come on... who doesn't? :) ) then I highly recommend the Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB SATA, 16MB Cache. I have the ATA/133 version, and it's great. I get higher average speeds than even Nick's drives (in the mid 50 MB/s) and it's quiet, I haven't had any problems, and it's darn fast. Plus there's a ton of room on the sucker! I've been using it since January as my main drive and have had no problems whatsoever with it. Good luck!

I'm partial to WD drives and Hitachi drives... Either one of those and you can't go wrong, the Samsung is a nice drive as well. Hell they're all nice drives, they'll all work top notch and probably wouldnt be able to notice the slightest difference in any of the drives if u were to bench em all.

Yeah.

You really cannot reccomend an HDD 'brand' because, they're all generally the same.

People reccomend certain brands, by opinion and experience with that manuf.

If you want to get real technical you can base it on warranty, but you generally shouldn't have a drive fail after a year old. If it makes it that long, it's all good.

I just buy the cheapest HDD's that are available in the spec and size I want them in.

This is how I got my WD. It was the cheapest 80GB SATA drive on Newegg at the time.

I guess Maximum PC's 9/10 and Kick Ass award for the drive, and CPUMAG's 4.5/5 CPU rating, and mine and many others great ratings mean the drive sucks...

Seriously though, I highly recommend that drive (Maxtor Diamondmax 10). It's very, VERY fast, has a huge buffer, fast read/write speeds... you can't beat it. And think how it will perform in RAID!

noise plays a big factor in it, you seem to be forgeeting that. certain brands are considerably noisier than others

I would tend towards the Samsung. They have made a thoughtful and competitive entry into hard drives - Not forgetting the 3 year warranty

The Maxtor DiamondMax 10 300GB SATA, 16MB Cache looks a good deal here in UK.

If you own this disk what do you think of the noise and heat generated by the DiamondMax.
