What makes them qualified? Let's get some facts here instead of cynical statements.
Elections, the world over, are not fought or bought on facts. The people placed in as head candidates are decided as those who people feel will represent a party based on their visual appeal to the demographic whos vote is sought after. I dont call that cynical, I call it being honest with how things throughout the world work. If u don't look the part, and don't speak the line, even if u are the most politically experienced, the most knowledgeable, u have no chance.
I mentioned Condelesa Rice, that would have been an awesome ticket imo.
If McCain, with all his physical attributes, became wheelchair bound due to his experiences, he would not be a candidate even if 30 years younger. Similarly Obama, if he were had a facial twitch when speaking infront of 1000s, despite being the best political mind of the time, no chance.
There is a big push for terms like "time for change" and "change is coming", we will bring change. But like so many political statements, change is just a word, with no factual basis as to what any of the candidates ever mean about what they'll do in the name of change.
It's political wranglings, crowd appeasement and rallying.
Amoungst some of the well written speeches tonite, "many of the things we hope to do may not come in the next year, or in this political term (4 years)", with the backing of both the country, the house and the power of office - and all the promises of whatever "change" is - why commit to a pledge that has it's basis on doing "things" that have immediately been swept into something they, after today, will now hope to do instead of doing with a mandate. All talk.
Few things worry me. Millions voting on the basis of skin color, that didn't vote 4 years ago, and may not vote in 4 years time if the skin colors change again.
It worries me further that after tonite we, and more importantly the world, know which village in Kenya the Presidents grandmother lives.
Tests of aggression I don't look forward to, and I think 2009 will be rife. It tends to happen in cycles. A regime where tough things need to be done, and are, the next election brings a nice regime and as soon as people are tired of being physically weak, the tough regime are voted back in, and so on.
I see a Clinton style US for the next 4 years, possibly 8. Outwardly appealing, perhaps financially naive at home despite being in a situation where in all honesty things cant get much worse. The markets will enjoy the honeymoon until measures are put in place mid 2009 that may be restrictive. Troops will not come home for years to come. Many things will be forgotten, as they do.
Then in 2 to 4 years the circus starts again !
All I want from this is a weaker dollar please, £1 = $2 was so much nicer.
